LEWISTON — Water service to an outer Lisbon Street neighborhood was shut off for about five hours Wednesday as a city crew worked to repair a leaking pipe.

Public Works Director David Jones said the leak in a water main was discovered at about 11 a.m. near 1240 Lisbon St. He blamed the leak on a broken valve stem connecting the main to a nearby motel.
"We don't know why it broke, but that was the problem," Jones said.
Public Works crews closed Lisbon Street between Scribner Boulevard and Foch Street beginning at about 11:30 a.m., and the 16-inch water main was exposed by 12:30 p.m.
Workers finished repairs by 3 p.m. and had begun recharging water lines and filling the hole, Jones said. Water service was restored to homes and the road was reopened by 4 p.m.
It was the second water main leak in Lewiston in two days. Crews on Tuesday repaired a broken 10-inch main on Sabattus Street near Grove. The Lisbon Street main is a bigger, 16-inch pipe and has more water pressure, Jones said.
The two leaks were not connected, he said.
"We were very grateful that this was the quicker repair," Jones said.
