Santorum's hypocrisy

A conservative ex-senator from Pennsylvania is gearing up for a presidential run.

In an appearance recently at Bates College, it was quite telling what Rick Santorum conveniently sidestepped. You know, the big issues: The debt the government owes that could squash the nation’s economic future; deregulation on Wall Street that nearly kicked the nation back to the Depression; unemployment stuck at 9 percent; and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that cost billions.

Santorum’s focus? Islam.

Remember the mosque at ground zero that really was not at ground zero but up the street and around the corner near strip clubs? Santorum was against it.

Now Santorum implies Islam is just bad straight across the board.

Perhaps he should have turned on Fox snooze to see not one but two brutal dictatorships fall with an amazing streak of, um , peace.

Those two events were a snippet into the real Muslim world view. Huge masses of people bringing down brutal oppression, without violence.

If Santorum actually believes what he says about Islam, then he should break the cozy ties the U.S. has with Saudi Arabia. If he feels that Islam is so dangerous, why is the U.S. best buddies with the Saudis?

You can’t have it both ways — attack Islam yet cuddle Saudi oil money or brutal Muslim dictators whom the U.S. supported for 40 years unless, of course, you are Rick Santorum. Then you just talk out of both sides of your mouth and invent things as you go.

Rick Santorum

It is impossible for a conservative republican to get a fair representation at Bates or in the liberal media. However, that in of itself gives Rick Santorum exposure that is favorable to the majority of the public which bodes well for the Tea Party conservative in 2012. So liberals keep up the good work. The more you bash the better.

Chris, I believe you talking about our current President who speaks that way no less than 3 times a week. Case in point. President Obama " we (meaning the US) have produced more oil in the last two years than we ever have before". Not possible if our oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico have been shut down by Presidential order since last summer. Now he is supposedly on vacation in Brazil and to strengthen our economic ties. Really??? Are we sure it's not to dump more US tax dollars into Petrobas, instead of drilling for our own oil in our own back yard? As for your claims of peaceful demonstrations in the Middle East, WOW, even CNN couldn't hide what really happened.

US oil production revives despite offshore disruption

By Ed Crooks in New York and Sheila McNulty in Houston; Published: March 2 2011 23:00 | Last updated: March 2 2011 23:00

(Partial Extract of Article)

US oil production last year rose to its highest level in almost a decade, thanks to an increase in the use of “unconventional” extraction techniques .

As a result, analysts believe the US was the largest contributor to the increase in global oil supplies last year over 2009, and is on track to increase domestic production by 25 per cent by the second half of the decade.

But it would reduce the country’s vulnerability to supply shocks and its trade deficit.

According to the US government’s Energy Information Administration, domestic production of crude oil and related liquids rose 3 per cent last year to an average of 7.51m barrels a day – its highest level since 2002.

The rise enabled a 2 per cent drop in US oil imports to 9.45m b/d, in spite of rising demand as the economy recovered. US oil imports have fallen steadily since 2006.

The revival of US production has been made possible by a rush of small and mid-sized companies into onshore regions such as the Bakken shale in North Dakota, the Permian Basin in west Texas and the Eagle Ford shale in south Texas."

It's 'Inventive Dave!' - with "Peaceful Demonstrations"

"Peaceful Demonstrations" is your coining of a phrase, Mr. Gagnon - not the letter writer's.

He wrote "Perhaps he should have turned on Fox snooze to see not one but two brutal dictatorships fall with an amazing streak of, um , peace."

That's right - relative 'peace' - as perhaps opposed to our American Revolution which took all of eight years and the raising of armies to free the American Colonies from the yoke of a brutal dictatorship. Historical context DOES matter. And they did it all without OUR invading them, OUR going trillions $$$ into debt, and the death and maiming of hundreds of thousands of people, and the lies of a dishonest administration. Who'da thunk it!!!
