Editor's note: Story updated at 1:20 p.m. New material in bold.
AUGUSTA — Last week a spokesman for Gov. Paul LePage said the disputed mural at the state Department of Labor would remain there until the administration found a new home.
Apparently the administration has had a change of heart.
The 36-foot mural depicting historical moments in Maine's work history has been removed from the lobby in the Labor Department.
Adam Fisher, a spokesman for the department, said this morning that the mural was removed over the weekend. He referred all additional questions to the Governor's Office.
Last Friday about 250 artists and union workers held a rally at the Labor Department to contest the mural's planned relocation to Portland City Hall. Robert Shetterly, an artist from Brooksville, said his group would mobilize again and urged the Portland City Council to vote against accepting the 11-panel art piece.
Portland Mayor Nick Mavodones said he was wary of the council being seen as "enabling" the governor's decision to remove the display. He also acknowledged that the fight unfolding in Augusta could suddenly shift to Portland.
It's unclear if pre-empting those factors is the impetus for the governor's decision to reverse its plans to keep the mural in its place until the Portland council's scheduled April vote to accept the relocation.
It's also unclear where the murals have been moved to.
"The mural has been removed and is in storage awaiting relocation to a more appropriate venue," said Adrienne Bennett, a spokeswoman for LePage. "Workers and employers need to work together to create opportunity for Maine’s 50,000 unemployed. We understand that not everyone agrees with this decision, but the Maine Department of Labor has to be focused on the job at hand."
Shetterly called the governor's decision to remove the mural "under the cover of darkness" a "sneaky and cowardly" move.
"If he's so right about why these images should be taken down ... why not do it in the light of day?" Shetterly said.
He said the governor's move would fail if it was designed to pre-empt the protests Shetterly alluded to last week. He predicted the resistance would be more vociferous now.
"The response will be overwhelming," Shetterly said. "Whether it's the NAACP, women, workers or artists, the governor has systematically disrespected all of these people. He seems to be working through each group, one at a time."
He added, "This is a crucial moment for the citizens of this state. I, frankly, can't allow this to happen."
Judy Taylor, the artist who made the mural, said she has no idea where the mural is being kept. Taylor said the governor's office had not contacted her since news broke that the governor planned to remove the 11-panel piece.
Taylor said she was stunned that the governor moved the piece over the weekend.
"To put something in the dark like that is just unAmerican," she said. "I don't know how he (LePage) would feel about his work being taken away from him."
David Marshall is one of nine Portland city councilors who would have voted on accepting the mural April 4. Marshall also originally introduced the idea of bringing the mural to Portland City Hall.
Marshall on Monday said he no longer supported Portland taking the mural.
"What was presented as a gift on Thursday has become a Trojan horse," said Marshall, who attended the protest at the Labor Department last week.
He added, "We heard from hundreds of people not to take the mural."
Marshall said he hadn't discussed the matter with other councilors, however, he said, "My guess is they're receiving the same overwhelming message that I am."
Labor Department employees seemed surprised to see the mural replaced by bare walls and spackling. Several popped into the waiting area to snap photos with their cell phones as news about the sudden removal spread.

Gov Lepage removes murals from the Dept of Labor
I am far from being alone when I say I don't know what to make of Gov. Lepage's actions, vis a vis his campaign promishes. He may be trying to conquer his political foes while claiming to balance the budget and "represent the people of Maine". It is not the fault of Organized Labor that Maine was identified as an inefficient, top-heavy State by the independent think tank, Brookings Institution. In that study it was found that Maine spent among the most per student and prison inmate and was one of the highest taxed States, which also had very low wages for workers. Maine has many, most excellent natural resources and an enormous Tourism Potential! I believe we are leveraging merely a fraction of that potential. Now the Governer wants a "Right to Work" law. How many readers know what this law means? It will lower wages and the standard of living further! Attacking skilled and in some cases licensed workers, will not create jobs or balance the budget! The corrupt Maine Turnpike Authority is just the tip of the iceberg of "the good ol' boy network", that is the Government of Maine. But please make no mistake, i blame all of us. The citizens of Maine have never held our elected officials accountable to their inherant obligation, to represent all of the people.
Now it appears that Gov. Lepage has gotten off-track and lost focus. Has the newly acquired power that Gov. Lepage wields, gone to his head? Where are the new jobs? Why no mention about the DHHS and all of the waste and mismanagement there? Please Mr. Gov., stop "mucking around" and go for the "big, fat dog first"!!

and this progress will be further improved when the new Right-to-Work legislation is passed in Maine. The Far-Left union bosses have been taking advantage of honest and hard working people in Maine for too long. It's time to cut the puppet strings and let Maine workers enjoy more of the freedoms they deserve (FMI, see www.MaineRTW.com). It's time for our local labor unions to start acting like labor unions again and stop wasting our tax dollars on their blatant Far-Left political games.

I know this is a bitter pill to swallow but we actually need JOBS in Maine and if we bring in companies to meet and discuss jobs, that would include talks within the Labor department. If there is a chance that a business might be offended or intimidated by the paintings than they should not be there. We need jobs and for the past 30 years we've watched democrats do nothing. If this decision helps create jobs in Maine, no one will remember it in a year, other than a couple whiners who will need a rallying cry as Governor lePage continues to gain support. And if the art work is ending up in another public area such as a museum, s that really such a bad thingg, given it will receive MORE exposure than its prior location?

Kathy, based on your logic, we can hang pictures of staughter houses at dept of agriculture because no vegans will visit? IN my humble opinion, there are bigger issues we need to worry about and that we need to ensure do not happen by any administration including the current one. I think folks picked the wrogn battle pn this one and when the paintings get hung elsewhere and get more exposure the whining will end but what will we have missed going on while the efforts were made here?

Step 3 ??? Renamed to the Department of Business?

Make sure all signatures are legal by getting a physical address . Phone numbers help , also . It's just like getting your name put on a balllot . There are many ways to remove appointed and elected officials . Some of them just walk out of meetings and abdicate their responsibilities . Others are simply forced in to resignation ( " I am not a crook " :) . Some Governors have been known to call out the National Guard to shoot people ( Ohio : Kent State 1 9 7 0 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings ) and even get away with it
We all rather doubt you will be able to impeach your Governor becuase he removed a wall hanging somewhere , though . He probably never even saw it except for in a picture

I just want to add this thought to this work: The "Mr. Dexter Shoes" of Maine--hundreds of companies historically, and companies to the present day, did not, does not achieve their wealth or "greatness" if it were not for the labor force that gave the "mill owners" their "prestige" and "power." My grandfather and my father worked their entire lives in the now x-paper company in Winslow; my mother worked at the now x-Hathaway Shirt Factory and my mother-in-law as well...I could go on and on listing people I know who did this work...but we all know of "rich" folks making their wealth off the labor of the workers depicted in the murals...there is NO division of labor and management/ownership. I want to see any company be successful without its labor force...

It was not the media that made this an issue. They only reported on what is happening in our state. It was Mr. LePage who created the issue for suggesting the removal of a mural that depicts the history of labor and business in Maine.
His actions and comments are making news across the country creating an image that will turn off those wishing to visit our beautiful state and suggesting that a labor force is not welcome here.

Marden's pays what retail stores pay! Period! When I searched for my very first job, the three places I would not work were: Department stores, grocery stores, and fast food. Why? Because they don't pay and offer little chance for real success! .....I knew that and I was just a kid!

I worked retail for 27 years and managed 12 retail stores including a Marden"s store. My wife started working for Marden's 27 years ago as a stock clerk and cashier. She now has a great job with Marden's with professional pay and great benefits. Mark, I've been most polite, but I have to suggest you quit blowing smoke out your ass (or keyboard) when you don't have a clue about working your way up in retail.
And Lepage never worked retail until he looked down his nose at all the little people he presided over and it made him feel powerful. He never would have had that job without Mickey Marden who started his retail chain out of the back of an old station wagon selling shoes.
Lepage never would have hired his "green behind the ears" daughter to work at Marden's as it would be far below her aspirations ,so he hired her to do a " do nothing job " for $41K on the taxpayer dollar in Augusta. Sorry to be so blunt, but I feel you need some education on the subject of "retail". Don't forget, without Mardens, and retail Lepage would still be shining shoes. Now go kiss your Governors BUTT!

Would you like to respond? Login or create a new account. You'll need to verify your account before you can respond.I never said it wasn't
I never said it wasn't possible! My point is, people don't generally grow up planning to be successful in retail. I've never heard a child say: "when I grow up, I want to be a stock clerk so I can work my way up to manager"! Much like I've never heard anyone say: "I'm gonna take that stock clerk job so I can make big money!" Yes, some do it! But of all the stock clerks and/or cashiers Mardens has ever had, what percentage would you say moved up the ladder and found real success?? Was that your plan when you started? To jump on the retail bandwagon and ride it all the way to the top? Or did it originally start as simply a "job" or "stepping stone" to get you to the next stage in your life that you later simply decided to stick with?
I spent quite a few years in retail too, I started at the bottom and worked my way up to management as well, but I also saw a LOT of others come and go along the way. I was only one of very many. The rest didn't make it.
That said, do I regret my years in retail? Absolutely not! I learned a lot that I was able to take with me to the wholesale side of the very same industry. I walked in at ground level to make considerably more than I was as a retail manager. I was still the same person with the same drive. I was still worth the same.....the problem was that retail job just wasn't worth any more than it was paying. My point: You can't take a job as a stock clerk and then complain about the money! It's like buying a 13 inch TV and then complaining that the screen should be bigger, on the same 13 inch TV.

A you said: "I know what entry level pay is in virtually all areas of retail and that is , minimum wage fits all." I want to thank you for supporting my original point that retail is not where people turn to when they want to make real money! This discussion started when Tom said: "Let me try another direction for you. Imagine the guilt of a man who took the mural down when he supports Marden's wages for the working class." implying that Marden's pays their employees less then they are worth. Marden's is a retail outlet that pays retail wages, in most cases minimum wage just as you yourself supported. Tom (like a few others I have chatted with) was implying that Marden's should pay more and I am saying that if Mardens employees are not happy with the pay then they need to find another line of work because retail pays, what retail pays!
Now, in your post at 5:30 you said: "Mark, in your first post you wrote," when I searched for my first job, the three places I would not work at were: department stores, grocery stores and fast food". Like a thief in the night, the coward destroys property of the State of Maine. Let's insist he reimburse the state, every single penny. Removing it from its intended place is an afront to the arts, quite understandable from this ignorant governor. However the people of this state must insist that it be repaid.

everyones frustration at how this was handled, and the anger at the way things were done, my big questions is where is the outrage and frustration that should be aimed at the fact that our lawmakers, legislature and illustrious Gov are wasting their time and our money on things such as murals and whoopie pies??? THAT is what should be making front page news.

Removing it over the weekend could be seen as controversial, but it was the best time to do it. Yes it may look suspicious, or make him look like a coward, but doing it over the weekend when no one was around was the easiest time to do it.
Now that it has been removed, perhaps it will go to the Maine State Museum or another state based museum where it can be viewed/enjoyed by all. By leaving it where it was, the only ones that could enjoy it were the ones that had business with the dapartment. I never knew about the mural until he wanted it removed. How many of you did?
We should be worried about finances. That has more of an impact on our future than a mural depicting the way life used to be.

In actuality, Ms. Moran, we do not. Any recall effort would have to be a constitutional amendment, which must be passed by the legislature and then ratified by the citizens. Since republicans have resisted any and all efforts to enact such an amendment, ever since people wanted to recall the liar McKernan, don't look for the ability any time in the near future.

What a remarkably dumb political move.
At a time when even his moderate Republican support is waning, Governor Paul "Le Petomane" LePage has set a new world record by blowing out the now nationally famous Taylor Murals at the Department of Labor with a single flatulent blast in the dead of night.
Paul, you've flayed the backs of working-class Mainers with your budget cuts. Why in the world are you throwing salt on their wounds?

Before I begin, let me say having seen the mural in real life, let me say that I think it does overpower the room and feels out of place.
That said, Paul LePage is an idiot. He is a political amatuer, and we probably only serve one term.
Disagree with me all you want, but from the get go, I have been saying he wont destroy Maine, and that everyone should give him a chance. Well, with that chance I gave him, he had jumped on every super politically viable topic he can find, and plant a flag.
Was the mural costing Maine jobs? Probably not(if you think it was, well then we have more serious problems if we can't attract business because of a mural)
So why make a big deal of it? All your doing is giving the other side more ammo to fundraise and charge up their side. The tea party is losing steam fast, meanwhile the coffee party(or whatever you want to call them) is picking up momentum, and gearing up for next November.
This creates no jobs, it doesn't endear you with people who didn't already love you, and it infuriates those who you don't want to motivate.
Its a dumb move.

LePage ordered it removed on the weekend and without notice so it would be done before people and the media knew about it.
The man is a coward which is the mark of the average schoolyard bully. Most of them take a swipe at the most defenseless, then run when unexpectedly confronted.
Hatred - no it's called pity. Both for us who must suffer the damage he is doing and for him because he becomes less than each time he opens his mouth.

i sure hope those guys that did the removing got paid overtime but with Lepage's policies toward labor, he probably had them do it for free at gunpoint or he hired one of those out of state businesses he's wooing to do it. probably the one he wants to take over the state prison.
So, why don't the 62% that didn't vote for him get a petition going and get this butthead out of there before he does something that really affects all of us. If this bonehead can screw up this many times in 3 months, at the end of 4 years, we'll all be living in a police state.

LePage just flipped the bird at the people of Maine, again.
By doing it on the weekend with no one looking provided more proof - cowardice - that he is little more than a schoolyard bully.
Absolutely pathetic.
It's time to resign, LePage.
But, since that won't happen, it's time for an amendment to the Maine constitution to allow the people to retire him involuntarily. It's called recall and most democracies have a way to do it.
