RUMFORD — A male pedestrian suffered head injuries after being hit by a truck Sunday afternoon in Rumford.
According to Rumford police Cpl. Lawrence Winson, George Dubendris, 73, of Rumford was hit by a 2001 GMC Sonoma truck driven by Katrina Milliken, 36, also of Rumford, at 6:30 p.m. Sunday on Route 2, also known as Rumford Avenue.
Winson said that Milliken was driving in the rotary on Rumford Avenue and hit Dubendris as she exited. Winson said that witnesses reported that Dubendris was crossing the road in a crosswalk when the crash occurred.
Winson said that Dubendris suffered head injuries and was taken to Central Maine Medical Center by helicopter. He was in critical condition Sunday night, according to a nursing supervisor.
Winson said Sunday night that the crash remains under investigation and that the Rumford Police Department was assisted by the Oxford County Sheriff's Office and Maine State Police, which helped reconstruct the crash.
No charges have been filed against Milliken, according to Winson. He added that speed, alcohol or drugs were not considered factors in the crash.
IF the witnesses were correct
IF the witnesses were correct about him using the cross walk than clearly what you have here is failure to yield for a pedestrian. I always slow down coming around the rotary. Don't know who's gonna pop up and if someone looks like they're gonna cross, just let them. Too many people are in a rush nowadays and don't wanna take that extra few seconds to play it safe.

What is there to investigate. Mr. Dubendris was in the cross walk. To say speed was not a factor is not comprehendable when there was head injuries as reported and Mr. Dubendris had to be life flighted. People once in the rotary speed up rather than slow down when exiting that rotary. So, to say speed wasn't a factor and in the same breath say it is still under investigation seems ludicrous.

They need to install a CCTV camera right in the rotary, too much wild driving in there.
