Your gripes- June 20, 2010

Everywhere we hear, "Wash your hands." Schools, hospitals, and when we go to restaurants we have a sanitary wipe.  We went into a deli the other day and the lady was making sandwiches, NOT WASHING HER HANDS and then taking money for change.  How sanitary is this? And when you think about it, what about those hot dog stands on the road, and the fairs. They aren't washing their hands either. And we wonder why we get sick. Can't everyone wash their hands?
— Pat Brann

Ok, so here is my gripe. I am a registered voter in Maine, I am also a member of the Penobscot Indian Nation, and right now what really gets my blood boiling is all this talk about bringing a casino to the Bates mill complex. Don't get me wrong, I am all for bringing jobs to Lewiston/Auburn. But back in 2003, the Native Americans wanted to build a casino and the referendum was rejected; again in 2007, the same thing.
But in 2008 the "BIG" Hollywood Slots and Raceway opened.
And now all this talk about a casino in Lewiston/Auburn? I have a great idea, why don't we just let the Native Americans build a casino! I mean, haven't we been screwed enough?!

My Gripe

Last winter I was driving 196 toward Lisbon. There was an electric wheelchair in my lane right by Rite Aid. I was watching the car on my left to make sure he was not coming into my lane, therefore I did not see the wheelchair guy and almost took him out Thank God for my passenger yelling "look out". Well a couple of weeks ago, a wheelchair guy was driving in the right lane on 196 by Burger King headed into downtown Lewiston. Why are they not driving on the sidewalk? Where are the Lewiston PD when you need them?

'an angry indian'

we can't change the past. what has been done, has been done to us or others. so why are we still trying to make people pay for other people's mistakes? same thing could be said for slavery. we have overcome and prevailed! be happy and content with that!!!

Here's what I'm griping about....the Sun Journal's lack of decent editorial writers! The editorials written by "we the people" are usuallly good, but the ones that are "Our View" or "Guest Editorial" are AWFUL!!!! Annie's eyes...seriously? French people are lazy?? For real?? You folks need some real writers who write about interesting, exciting, or contraversial topics. I AM BORED TO TEARS!!

The unwillingness of school

The unwillingness of school administrators and school boards to consollidate so our children can get an education. It is always new programs "we are looking into in" and protecting their own jobs over our children's futures. The time for looking into it passed long ago so did the need for all these non-teaching positions.

Also the near complete absense of cultural and educational opportunities theaters (not movie), galleries and museums are nonesistant in most communities and extremely scarse within the state as a whole.

Rejection of anything and everything that means jobs

The rejection of anything and everything in the way of economic development existing or new out of hand. The NIMBY ATTITUDE. This has included the distruction of pulp and paper, textiles and shoes to name a few that were here and wind turbines. plum creek and casinos that have been proposed. The same people complained that pulp and paper, textile and shoes poluted and caused damaged to tourism object to wind turbines but also object to casinos and plum creek which would have brought tourism. The same people complain about bad pay from serice jobs in tourism worked to drive out the good paying jobs in pulp and paper. Personally, I prefer to work making a goos living, I have become convinced all of these NIMBYsare really just trying to keep jobs out so they can keep collecting a welfare check and it has nothing to do with protecting mountain tops our tourism, prostitution, crime, taxes or any of their other arguments which they contradict themselves.

help to kill economic development

"If you clean it, they will come." I think maybe cause and effect are reversed there. But never mind. What's really needed is for the state to get rid of all the the mamby pamby liberals and big spending democrats whose talk about social welfare and so on is scaring off business developers. Maybe that would work. Just support the conservative politicians like in Mississippi and Alabama. Then again, maybe not. I think not.

I have two that also help to kill economic development

Filth! This state is absolutely filthy. You talk about employees in food service, hospitspals etc not washing thier hands, you have to plow through trash, junk vehicles, and dog poop on the side walk before you get there. VACATIONLAND! Ya right! Who wants to look at the bag upon bag of garbage along every street and road even in town and I am not talking about trash day, ooops maybe thats everyday. Do not tell me it is the out of staters , I know better, I see it being dumped out car widows, deliberately as "unsecured loads" in trucks and tossed as you walk down the street. Residents stop at DD to pick-up a coffee and toss the cup on the river bank over the bridge, lovely. Computer monitor quits, put it in the car and drive over to the rotary and toss it over the fence onto the river bank to impress the tourists; goes well with the falls and the car parts you put there last week. You take your dog out, they crap on the sidewalk on the historic business island, your neighborhood sidewalk or green area or your neighbors front lawn and you leave it as an ornament, how rude and disgusting. Yards are the equivalent of personal junkyards surounding unkemp filthy falling down shacks that have gone way beyond "rustic". It is no longer an occassional boarded up building but streets with an occassional building that is not. Condemned notices dominate! These do not make up "tourist attraction." Whatever happened to.Maine Pride? Please cleanup your act and cleanup Maine! If you have a clean, neat yard with no junk and dog poop, go help clean public areas or your neighbor clean thiers.Make Maine Beautiful Again!

Sun Journal Comments Section

My gripe is that the comments section has turned into a forum for foul-mouthed bickering between a handful of people who are not really interested in the stories themselves, but in spewing garbage at each other. The SJ moderators do not choose to do much about this...maybe this bologna brings eyes to the web site? I am embarrassed to share any story with anyone out of town because I don't want them to see the ignorance below. If the comments can't be monitored and moderated more effectively, they should be turned off.

foul mouthed bickering

Who could be against foul mouthed bickering? And who doesn't like to watch? Without a doubt it brings eyes to the web site. Isn't that what free enterprise is all about?
