Maine senators want Topsham commissary kept open

TOPSHAM, Maine (AP) — Maine's U.S. Senators are pressing the Pentagon to reconsider plans to close a commissary in Topsham that serves about 10,000 people in the military community.

U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins sent a letter Thursday to Under Secretary of Defense Clifford Stanley to ask for a response to previous pleas that the Department of Defense review its guidance on the closing.

The facility was scheduled to close in March, but a bill passed in January required the Pentagon to review a Government Accountability Office report before making a decision.

The bill said targeted stores must remain open for at least two months after the Defense Secretary makes a decision, or Sept. 15 at the earliest.

The commissary serves active duty military, National Guard members, reservists, retirees and their families.
