Detective promoted, two others hired at LPD

LEWISTON —  A veteran officer of the Lewiston Police Department has been promoted and two new patrolmen have been hired, Chief Michael J. Bussiere announced.

Detective Brian O'Malley, 43, was promoted to the rank of sergeant and is assigned to patrol working nights. A 20-year veteran of the department and a graduate of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, he has served in the Patrol Division and most recently served 12 years as a detective working violent crimes.

During his time as a detective, he assisted in clearing numerous bank robberies and murders for which he received several commendations. O'Malley was the Lewiston Police Relief Association Officer of the Year for 2009. This award is given as recognition by his peers for his understanding work within the community.

O'Malley is a graduate of Providence College in Rhode Island and is active in Maine Special Olympics.

Officer Jerry Ritcheson, 38, was recently hired by the department. He is a graduate of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and worked as a patrol officer for Topsham for four years and for the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office for one year.

He grew up in Lisbon Falls and graduated from Lisbon High School. He joined the U.S. Navy where he has served a combined 20 years between active and reserve status. Prior to being hired by LPD, he worked as an overseas security consultant.

Officer Scott Hill, 39, has also joined the department. He is a graduate of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and worked as a patrol officer for the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office for 13 years. He grew up in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School.

He joined the U.S. Marines where he served four years. He is a student at the University of Maine at Augusta where he is in the bachelor's program for liberal arts with a minor in political science. Prior to being hired by the LPD, he worked for the State Department as a police adviser with overseas deployment.
