State police investigate the scene of a fatal motorcycle-truck crash on Route 4 in Turner on Wednesday afternoon.

TURNER — An Auburn woman was killed Wednesday afternoon when her motorcycle struck the side of a pickup truck on Route 4.

Police said 54-year-old Margaret Wing of 20 Gage Lane was killed instantly when her 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle was struck by a pickup driven by John Robinson, 73, of Turner.

Wing was not wearing a helmet, according to a press release issued by the Maine State Police Thursday morning.

According to the release, the investigating officer, Trooper Ricci Cote, said speed and alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident.

State police were reconstructing the crash as part of their investigation into the fatal wreck, which occurred at about 3:30 p.m.

The crash took place as Robinson made a left hand turn in front of the motorcycle, at the intersection of Oakwood Drive, the release stated.

After the crash, the truck, a white pickup with a plow in front and a sander in back, came to a stop at the side of Route 4 in front of Oakwood Drive, a short road leading into a mobile home park. The motorcycle came to rest on the paved shoulder a few feet away.

The crash forced the closure of a stretch of Route 4 between the Chickadee Restaurant and the plaza that houses the Big Apple and Dunkin' Donuts. Afternoon commuter traffic was rerouted around the scene, onto Fern Street to the south, Wood Street to the north.

accident victim

Regardless of who hit whom, that stretch of rt 4 is very bad. I used to work there at the big apple when it was on the other side of the road. One day a small car and a jeep collided when the small car turned into the path of the jeep. They almost hit a lady that was getting gas. The small car didn't even see the jeep. The jeep had started slowing down trying to anticipate the car but the car never slowed just cut in front of it. It almost hit the store as well. That area needs a turning lane with a barrier of some sort. People don't pay attention anyway. Mt prayers and thoughts are with the wing family. Sorry for your loss.

It really irks me that the

It really irks me that the officer makes it a point to say she wasn't wearing a helmet then goes on to say it wouldn't have made a difference anyway (in the TV interview)......if it wouldn't have made any difference then why even mention it? And why not mention the law that was broken by the driver of the truck....failure to yield right of way? This tragic death had nothing to do with any helmet. It had EVERYTHING to do with pure and simple negligence on the part of the truck driver. I am willing to bet he went home without even a summons, kissed his wife, told her he loved her then sat down in his recliner........

My Lady and I were out for a

My Lady and I were out for a bike ride and came across the accident just after it happened. Before the police arrived. It was horrible! The bike was almost implanted into the side of the truck. It was a black cruiser bike maybe a Harley. We couldn’t tell the person on the bike was a woman. She was wearing blue jeans and and a light orange top. She laid crumpled up by the rear tire of the truck. If you look at the picture there is an orange object by the rear tire of the truck. That may or may not be her but it is where she was laying . I don’t think a helmet would have helped this person at all. The person laid in a position that was so crumpled up we could not see the head so we do not know if she had one on.

I also don’t recall seeing any skid marks. The bike seemed to drive right into the truck. We just drove by it was obvious the person was dead and there was nothing we could do. It was a OMG, OMG, OMG horrible, horrific moment. We pulled over down the road and said a prayer for her. We continued our ride but the images of what happed to her will be with us for a long time. Our condolences to the family and friends that she left behind.
