Has anyone else noticed that the most vehement opponents of wind power — a non-polluting energy source — seem to be the people who complain the loudest about global warming?
It's ironic, because if the dire predictions about global warming are true, then the impact on Maine's forests and overall ecology will be infinitely more profound than any number of wind turbines.
The hypocrisy is breathtaking.

How about migratory birds??? I saw 1 blade on these things going down the road in North Conway. Being in manufacturing, I can't imagine the amount of energy to A. Make this thing B. Transport it to its home c. how long this thing needs to operate reliably before it even breaks even. In business there are good ideas and then there are good opurtunities and then there are government subsidized ideas...

Pay attention to the facts. Don't be a sellout to the rich boy's.We and most of all our children will loose what we have. Hydro, natural gas and even nuclear power would be way ahead of the wind turbines who's steel is made in coal fired steel plants in Vietnam. I'm sure they have pollution controls that match U.S. standards. (NOT) I strongly feel your motivation has nothing to do with being green ED. There won't be any turbines in Rumford. People here are not that gullible.

Mr. Hall, I have no idea of your background, but you are very wrong about opponents of wind power. I am one of the most outspoken opponents. I oppose wind power because it doesn't work. The last published figures of US production, published by USEIA, states that nation-wide, including the highest performing wind sites, the average capacity factor was 27.7%. Wind power is thrust upon us through mandates for ever increasing percentages of electricity to come from costly, inefficient renewables. It is an expense that is socialized through tax subsidies and REC sales that get passed through to ratepayers. It is such a pathetic, unpredictable, unreliable source of electricity generation that the private investers would never touch it without the afore-mentioned subsidies and mandates.
It is a foolhardy approach to your concern about global warming. Address these problems at the source. Reducing carbon and noxious emissions at the stack has a much smaller cost than building wind turbines with thewir huge ecological footprint. With all due respect, Mr. Hall, do your homework on economics before calling people hypocrites. I refuse to stand by and allow the mountains and other uplands of our beautiful state be destroyed to the folly of wind.

There you go being inaccurate again. Oil reserves are nowhere near to being depleted. We are the Saudi Arabia of coal reserves on this planet. The only reason the liquification of coal is being delayed is simply that there is still way too much money to be made with oil. America's energy needs/problems will never be solved/met without petroleum, natural gas, and coal being involved in the mix. Never.

As a homeowner, would you ever buy a major appliance that worked less than 30% of the time; that frequently didn’t worked when you needed it; that when it is working revs up and down and sometimes quits without warning; that needs another expensive appliance to sit idling inefficiently to back up your favored appliance; that costs many times more for what it does than that back up appliance?
I certainly would never buy that appliance, but that’s what we are doing with wind turbines. Taxpayer subsidies, mandates and preferential treatment thrust upon us an industry that would never, and should not, exist otherwise.

Mr. Hall you need to do some homework about wind power. Its not about global warming or saving the planet. Its about GREED, plain and simple. Wind power is very destructive with little pay back, except for the subsides and TIFs the LLC companies make. If you had been following the news and information a little closer you would realize the return on wind is minimal, around 20 to 30% of its rated capacity. That is a drop in the bucket for the amount of damage it does to the environment. Miles and miles of roads have been built,hundreds of wetlands have been destroyed, waterways filled with silt and sand, for what, a few megawatts or power? Your statement only shows how uniformed you really are about wind.
