Obama has real guts

Obama has real guts

We are getting so sick and tired that every time President Barack Obama tries to do something to get this country back on its feet, the Republicans say “no.”

Just think back if you can, of all the times we had a Republican as president, things were not good. All they want to do is make the rich richer.

Look at when George W. Bush was president. He was handed a surplus from President Bill Clinton and, months later, we were in the hole and at war. He made a lot of rich people richer with tax breaks and the way the banks and housing markets went bananas.

Has everybody really forgotten the past and how we got where we are, or does everyone have their head in the sand?

We do not care for freeloaders in public office and, as far as we’re concerned, we have two Republican senators who seem to fit the bill. Neither one of them did much of anything to keep Brunswick Naval Air Station open, and now what are they doing to keep our commissary in Topsham open for the retirees who still live here?

They transferred the planes and military people to Florida. We have no bases left in Maine, but Florida has 12.

Everybody, it seems, is down on Obama, but we think he had a lot of guts to even take on this job with the people who are against him from the House and Senate.

Obama's Plan

When NAFTA was implimented thats when all the skilled jobs started leaving the United States. We need to start thinking about the our intrests here at home rather than sending billions over seas to support other goverments. Stop sending food and other goods also and feed our hungry and helpless people until they get back on there feet. Stop giving billions of dollars to the UN, I have worked with them all they do is waste money.

We are not going to be able to spend our way out of this. We need to cut spending and may be raise taxes and stop wasting the tax payers money!

Obama has Cuts?

Now thats funny! When you hear all of his speeches you certainly have to ask that question. So far all he has done is whin about GWB and has yet to introduce and bills?? If you look at his speeches on Jobs since Jan 2009 the speech he gave at the joint session was a compilation of those speeches. For 2 years he had all that a president could hope for and look at what happened and you blame repubs?? Tells me how uninformed you are. You cannot spend what you dont have to Prosperity all programs are a creation of govt creating jobs for instance: news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-20102063-54/solyndra-bankruptcy-was-disaster-waiting-to-happen

Our politicans have blunder our country into a nation of entitlement programs. People there no way that we can survive this, for God sakes wake the frig up. What takes guts is to do the right thing. and those can be defind and done but NO ONE has The GUTS especiallaay Obama! we are out of the ditch now and going over the cliff!

Tell Me - What can the Government do?

“curb unemployment” – Please tell me how the Government can curb unemployment?

1. Print money to hire more employees.
2. Raise taxes to hire more employees.
3. Tax the Rich to hire more employees.
4. Reduce obstacles for the private sector to hire more employees.

Please tell me, really, what can Government do?

Perhaps people are seeking solution in the wrong places!

I recognize the melody

See that is what I am talking about same old song again. Cut taxes, give money to the rich, take it away from the poor, big worry about the deficit. Here's a "new" idea. Last week the governor noticed that there are roughly the same amount of jobs available as there are unemployed workers. The problem, he said, is that the unemployed do not have the skills required for those jobs. Where he went wrong is that he said he wants to train more manual laborers. Those are the workers that are currently unemployed. We already have too many manual laborers for the jobs that exist. What is needed are technical skills, and training. How about tweaking existing training programs so that they match the needed skills and handing out scholarships and loans to people who need retraining. Yes, you are spending money but you are also creating an employed person who pays taxes and goes shopping rather than one who collects unemployment. Government can do plenty to curb unemployment and has done so in the past. What we need is a government that works for all Americans rather than the good ol billionares club.

MARK GRAVEL's picture

I’ll do my best to respond.

Dear Claire,

1. “… same old song again. ….” – I asked what I thought was a simple question – “what can Government do?” – I don’t know where you heard the song and dance, but I leave it at that.

2. “… [G]overnor noticed…” – The Governor’s comments do have merit. I’m hearing the same message across the U.S.. Over the past decade the U.S. education system has put more emphasis on college education and less on teaching the trades (i.e. electrician, plumber, construction, auto mechanic.). In my opinion, this is one example where the education system (i.e. Government) has failed to teach skills the market needs. However, there is always a silver lining. That is, if you have skills in an area that has a shortage of workers, you’re in a good economic position.

3. “How about tweaking existing…” – The Government is simply not responsive enough to changing market needs. Just step back from the problem and ask yourself how we got to this point in the first place – A: Government tweaking everyone toward a college education and neglecting the trade skills. Do we really want to look to the same gang to fix the problem? No, but we do; perhaps that explains why these problems persist.

I’ll close my comments with the following message to those Businesses that claim they cannot find enough skilled works. Given the high unemployment rate and underemployment rate, I find it hard to believe a business cannot find labor with a closely matched skill set that they cannot train into the position. Perhaps businesses should increase compensation to attract people with the needed skills; after all, capitalism is a two-way street – don’t rely on the Government to solve your specific employment needs. Hire an apprentice and train them yourself if the current education system cannot meet your needs (of course I’m assuming the Government can educate the basics – reading, writing, ..,etc so businesses have a foundation to work with).

The republican mantra

The one note tune I'm hearing from all (and I do mean all) Republicans these days: cut taxes for the rich (excuse me job creators), shrink government (meaning only the safety net) and cut the deficit (as long as a democrat is in office). If that is what they are offering for 2012, I will be voting for Obama again because none of that will curb unemployment, fix our rotting infrastructure, educate our kids for the future, keep our elderly safe, lower the deficit or get us out of the many wars we are mired in. Not that Obama has the answers either but at least there is a shot at a new idea that just might work.

MARK GRAVEL's picture

Dear George and Joan:

“Look at when George W. Bush was president.” I’m no friend of George W., but I’m always a bit surprised at how much power people attribute to a single individual. They conveniently forget that the House of Representatives and Senate also influence policy.

Bill Clinton was the benefactor of the DOT_COM bubble, which significantly increased revenue due to sharp increases in short –term capital gains from excessive trading. Bill Clinton had no influence on the events that increased revenue. In fact, maybe we should chastise him for not realizing that the stock market was in a bubble and taking action.

That said, I will give Clinton credit for not encouraging spending increases that would have consumed the excess revenue. You must also keep in mind that Bill Clinton’s approval rating had dropped prior to his second term, and the GOP use that to keep the Democrats spending in check – (i.e. remember Welfare Reform).

In closing, I’ll leave you with this thought. Washington is like a complex mathematical expression with many independent variables. Attributing all outcomes to one variable (the President) is oversimplifying the issue – we call that partisan politics. In my opinion, the only solution is to shrink the size of Government; thereby, minimizing the impact Government has on our lives – yours and mine.

I like

Theres more to be sd about the Clintons, one notable piece of Legislation CRA of 1999 instead of researching what really cause or economy issues people rather blame George Bush as has Obama so much easier to do! If people would stop watching liberal media and research what reaally caused it they may not watch the liberal media again. Its my hope that whatever veil is over the eyes of those who believe in Obama is really take a look what has been happening. Some folks need to study our world History to even learn more for whats happening today. Most folks today are just to simple minded.

Glen Lee's picture

No Fox isnt my entire research

So it's the repubs when Obama submitted his Budget of some 3.7t the senate voted 97-0 seems like his own party didnt like it either, so show me how the repubs have stopped him, now the senate contolled by the liberals did not pass a budget in over 850 days!! not the repubs fault, rem too Obama had the senate and the congress.http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DXuzgOzPTqeg

Dan allow me to ask you this, If the IRS came to your house and gave you fine of lets say $1500 a penality for not having insurance how would respond? pay up or go to jail??

The economy always "hums" in a bubble - until it bursts.

The dot-com bubble started in 1995 and ran to its climax on March 10, 2000. These are not obscure facts, they should be common knowledge. Bill Clinton was the 42nd President, and his administration ran from 1993 to 2001, also common knowledge. Bill Clinton’s economy was the fortunate benefactor of the dot-com bubble.

What should we take away from these facts? One should not assume Bill Clinton’s policies created a robust economy. In fact, Clinton benefited for an upswing in the natural business cycle, which we historically refer to as the dot-com bubble. Moreover, I personally fault Bill Clinton for not attempting to cool the dot-com bubble which lead to the economic downturn beginning March 10, 2000. Note that the economy always “hums” in a bubble - until it bursts.

In closing, you have a tendency to deflect form the topic at hand and associate one’s opinions to a political party, so let me state squarely and firmly; I do not blindly support either party, and I lay fault on all administrations from Wilson to present for leading us to where we are today - sporting a $14 Trillion dollar (and growing) debt.

George and Joan, You rock!

In my 64 years I've never seen a president appeal to both houses of congress so committed to help chart America's future. His initiatives are bold and his ideas have job creating initiatives. McConnel came on after the speech and said it had nothing to do with creating jobs and only a reelection speech. This is the kind of crap republicans have to offer. Nothing about creating jobs, JUST CRAP!! Good God--when is this CRAP going to end? Obama said unemployed folks can't wait 14 more months for the next election and he's right but do the republicans care? Hell no! They simply want to see him fail so they can get another party member in there and the hell with suffering Americans. Makes me want to puke on somebody, where's Frost proof?

Glen Lee's picture

What??

McConnell simply told the truth! Obama now is known as "The Great Divider" Never in the history of our country has one man destroyed our economy, no one else has divided this country like he has, Always speaking about class warfare, Pitting Unions against non unions! Obamas youth: http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DcdPSqL9_mfM
Never before has our country being fundamentally changed in the eyes of this socialist. He said he would and as he does he continues to go against our constitution. This Prez does not repect our constitution :http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0311/51668.html
Tell me how many of you understand this with the central govt controlling everything?? Stalin was a socialist chairmen Mao Obamas hero, Woodrow Wilson and Hitler a socialist that despised capitalism as does Obama, Obama even hates the constitution, all one has to do it research it. And yet some of you choose to turn your eyes and ears away to what he and his progressive freinds are doing t this country. Just look at history and you may learn something.

AL PELLETIER's picture

It's too bad

Another post that does nothing to solve this countries problems. Just another bunch of name calling and references to historical radicals who I don't think Oboma has and ever could become, our system would not allow it. As I said in an earlier post, don't look back, but to the future, and Glen, your so far back in the past, your as dead and buried as Stalin, Hitler and Mao. I served in Nam for almost 3 years and I've looked at history in real life and not through the internet. Rest well, my friend, your president, the Great Divider, gave us a safe day on this 9/11----Better then Bush did, but that's in the past.

Glen Lee's picture

Live in the ppast?

No I dont but when you study and research the truth always prevails. I can tell that you have blinders on and I understand that. But Obama has placed Radicals into Czars abd other appointments Take the time and pull up thier names and then research them and you will the past and action dictates to who you are. I have served my country 64-68 and have seen much in life to this point. Our system is allowing it, just llok at how many time he already gone behind congress against laws that congress has passed. Even some Democrats see it and are very distrubed by it. Dennis Kucinich has called for his impeachment and rightly so.
I am looking foward thats why I write and warn you for some of you like yourself just dont get it. The behavior of these men should alarm you because Obama is a true progressive socialist. Redistributsion of wealth does that mean anything to you? Listen to his speeches and read his book maybe just maybe you may realize that the past (history) is repeating itself in this country. What has he done in the first 2 years? its not the repubs fault as some claim. The Great Divider didnt give us a safe day our militaary did but more important Bush's polices did not Obama for Obama carried forth Bush's polices because Obama didnt have a clue as what to do, Beside if Clinton would have pursued Bin Laden maybe 9/11 would not have happened.

I have made no assertion whatsoever about economic plans from the GOP. You, however, did make the assertion that Obama has bold ideas for job creation. To quote you: “His [President Obama’s] initiatives are bold and his ideas have job creating initiatives.”

That said, if you are willing to have a dialog on specifics rather than generalities, I’m game. All that I asked you to do is to pick one and only one of Obama’s initiatives, so we (the blog) can discuss the details and merits of the President’s proposal with LASER focus.

Sorry Kucera, but your BBC article contradicts what you believe to be your truth. It states that Clinton rode out the longest economic boom in the history of the US economy and they fail to state that the boom started during Regan's second term and run all the way through the Clinton years. Then they go on to say that the economy was in a down turn when Clinton left office. Apparently you winy liberals who love tax increases like to forget the fact that our economy went into the tank after 9/11 and the tax cuts were used to spur the economy forward which is exactly what happened. And as I recall according to my economics class that contrary to what these commi democrats have been feeding you, an economy with a 4.5% employment rate is considered full employment. That 4.5% rate was sustained till Bush's last year in office, when it rose to 6.5% and your bud Obama promised it wouldn't go over 8% after he took office. Obama has done nothing to move this economy forward. His whole stimulus did nothing but save union jobs in the public sector and caused more loses in the private sector. The man is a union kiss ass and is only repaying his union thugs that got him where he is today. Oh and one more thing, get off your lazy ass and go check my figures on the US Treasury site before you accuse me of using a rabid right wing site.

I am not going to peruse the Treasury website to verify your stats. I saw those stats on a, yes, rabid right-wing site that comes up second in the simple Google search "Clinton deficit stats." The BBC piece comes first. If you want to put up your speicific link, please do, in context.

Oh Mark. According to the BBC

Oh Mark. According to the BBC article brought to our attention by your friend Kecera, the economy was in a downturn when slick was in his last year and handed Bush a sinking economy (that's fact, Bush took office in a downturn). 9/11 took place and tanked it. But wait, 9/11 was Bush's fault according to you people. But under your boy Clinton, we had attacks on an Embassy, the USS Cole and the first attempt on the twin towers all unanswered by slick. Oh excuse me, he launched 2 million dollar missile at a nomads tent in the mountain deserts. Good move to stave off terrorists. His poor performance on served to emboldened Bin Laden.

Mark Wrenn's picture

Hah! Good one!

Let's see the 2001 recession started in March, who was pres? Unanswered attack on twin towers? Another good one! "NEW YORK CNN A judge Thursday sentenced the man convicted of masterminding the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and an airplane bombing in 1994 to life in prison without parole. The judge further recommended that he spend the sentence in solitary confinement." http://goo.gl/4EfNb And..."After three days of deliberation in November, a federal jury convicted Yousef and Eyad Ismoil on murder and conspiracy charges for their roles in a plot by Islamic extremists to topple the trade centers two 110story towers to punish the United States for its support of Israel.Ismoil was accused of driving a truck with a 1,200pound bomb into the World Trade Centers parking garage, where it was detonated on February 26, 1993. Hes scheduled to be sentenced next month.Four other men have already been convicted in the case, each receiving a sentence of 240 years in prison." http://goo.gl/rNAok So, during the Clinton admin, the mastermind and crew were caught, convicted, and sentenced? Oh please CNN(Communist News

"WASHINGTON (AP) — Military prosecutors re-filed terrorism and murder charges Wednesday against the suspected mastermind of the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, making it the first case to move forward since President Obama ordered military trials to resume at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. They also requested the death penalty in the case." http://goo.gl/5XY2h

No figures were manipulated

No figures were manipulated Danny boy. The surplus was never there. That fable was created by Blitzer and the boys at CNN so Clinton could have his legacy. Like I told your friend "US Treasury" best site to find the truth about your boy Slick Willy.

"If you look at the projected

"If you look at the projected surplus of the last Clinton budget before Bush got to it, it was a surplus."
That would depend on what your definition of "was" was.

A mere shell game !!

The real surplus was a shell game as he borrowed from Peter to pay Paul and the media and uninformed public took it as gospel truth. As long as we are borrowing from the "FED" , it will be impossible to have a surplus !!

Good post, David. The parrot got all giddy when he read it. Said something about, "That'll show them Clinton Surplus Tooting Libmos".

"Look at when George W. Bush

"Look at when George W. Bush was president. He was handed a surplus from President Bill Clinton and, months later, we were in the hole and at war."

Don't suppose the 9/11 attack on our Country and Hurricane Katrina might have had something to do with that, do you, George?
