Police still investigating standoff story

LEWISTON — Police on Wednesday continued to investigate a standoff that ended in suicide last week, but authorities failed to turn up a handgun the dead man allegedly used to threaten a neighbor shortly before the standoff began.

Police said they planned to again interview that neighbor, Justin Lee Lord, 31, of 2 Towle St., in an effort to determine whether he was truthful when he told police he was a victim of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.

Daniel Bussiere, 49, of 163 Holland St. died Sept. 3 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head and neck, a spokeswoman at the Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said. His suicide came about 20 hours into standoff with police.

Bussiere held police at bay in his first-floor apartment from 5 a.m. Wednesday until about 12:30 a.m. Thursday after the State Police Tactical Team shot tear gas through the building's windows.

Lord told police that Bussiere had threatened him as he was walking to work that morning by putting as handgun on the bridge of his nose shortly before the standoff started.

In a handwritten statement, Lord said: "He Dan put a (silver) and black gun to my head it looked like a 357 i could see into the (chamber) of the gun the (bullets) was like a copper color he Dan said 'I got something 4 you now i did not (reply) to him i was scared i was (froze) he was pushing the (barrel) into between my eyes then he pulled back the hammer of the gun he Dan was shaking the gun was at my head 4 about more than 2 to 3 minutes then Dan put the gun down to his (side) I saw my chance to run so I ran to 7-11."

Police recovered from Bussiere's apartment a 30-30 Savage hunting rifle that had one spent shell and one live round. They also found a BB gun in his living-room and a knife under his mattress, but no other weapons, according to a search warrant returned to 8th District Court.

Police Lt. Mark Cornelio said Wednesday the investigation remained open as police searched for the handgun Lord described in his statement.

"Was this whole thing a lie by Mr. Lord just to get his neighbor in trouble?" Cornelio asked. Or maybe Bussiere hid that gun before holing himself up in his apartment, Cornelio said.

"Unfortunately, we'll never be able to talk to Mr. Bussiere and get his side of the story," Cornelio said.

Police had issued a warrant for Bussiere's arrest on a charge of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon the day of the standoff, based on Lord's statement. Although that charge was dropped, there are "still a lot of unanswered questions," Cornelio said. "We owe it to the Bussiere family to continue to follow through with this."

Bussiere had two prior convictions for assault, both dating back to 1996.

Lord has convictions for two felonies and several misdemeanors, including carrying a concealed weapon in 2007, according to state records.

We're still waiting for

We're still waiting for people to be charged for crimes commited. It seems the LPD could sacrifice one donut to do the right thing. IT's been over a week people, let's get this done NOW!! Where's the follow up by the SJ?

The blame game! Let's all

The blame game! Let's all accuse others of murdering Dan. Let's all make up stories and slander people's names. Let's try as hard as we can to ruin as many lives as we can. Let's shread as many reputations as we can. Let's take this tragedy and try to make it worse. And, oh, yeah, may Dan rest in peace. Duh, the blame game!
Let's just suppose that one of these people you are shreading commits suicude. Will you blame yourself?

If you knew Dan & the real

If you knew Dan & the real truth you wouldn't be saying that!! He was a good friend, and I knew him well! A lie cause his death. What if this was your brother! Believe me this is no game, a life was lost! The truth will be told, and someone will pay. You will see!

I knew him too, very well.

I knew him too, very well. And if false reports were made, I hope they will be punished accordingly. However, it was said that Dan was on medication. The truth is he had refused to take his meds for a long time and was self-medicating with street drugs. He was an angry and unhappy man who always demanded his own way, and he would yell, rave, swear, and threaten if he didn't get it. He was on the scanner all the time for driving irratic, causing a disturbance, yelling threats, etc. Maybe if he would have taken his meds, his attitude would have been different. It was also said on a blog that he was on medical marijauna. I live near his dealer, and if this is true, then how come he was constanty going to his dealer's, and coming out with drugs. Dan had been off the wall for a long time. I don't know why his doctors, therapists, or anyone in authority didn't do something to get him the help he needed. People who knew him were saying "suicide ' and "suicide by cop" that day because they knew how Dan was. You may call Dan an angel and the Browns and Lords terrible people. But I personally think he acted outrageously, and the system failed him. If you really knew him, you know this is true. I think I'm angry at him for doing such a stupid thing as killing himself, and mad at the system for not getting him help long ago.

OH MY GOD!!! I knew it. I've known Dan all my life. I knew he wouldn't do something like that!! The truth will come out!! I knew about the Savage, his father gave that to him when he passed away. I also knew he DID NOT have another gun. They won't find the gun, because there is no other gun. It didn't sound like Dan, to do something like that. I knew it!! They all lied!!! I am so upset!! My friend is dead because of this...... He'd been teased all his life! Why can't people just mind thier OWN buisness. This would of never happen!!!!!!! I feel sick! They will discover, he NEVER had that gun and the guy lied. Not pionting any fingures. It will be fact. (Keep up the good work). This was a very senceless death of my friend!!! How can people sleep at night. I have'nt! And now to hear this. I knew it! I knew it!! LOOK AT THE BE PICTURE!! The other guy has been in trouble before. And with a gun. I do not see where this

I do not see where this woman should be charged with Manslaughter @ all. So if I was to slap someone across the face and a couple days later they committed sucide, I should be charged with assisting in there sucide? Thats bullpucky if you ask me. It is unfortunate that this mans life had to end this way, but before putting the blame on others, get the facts and let LPD do their job. if you think you can do it better, get a Criminal Justice Degree, attend maine criminal justice academy and apply as officers. Until then, let the cops do their job.

sorry, I don't like Dunkin' Donuts that much.

Wireless if her lying bout

Wireless if her lying bout the slapping led to her son falsifying his report to the pd then they BOTH need to be charged with involuntary manslaughter. They have been harrassing this poor guy all along and deserve whats coming to them. Dont have to be a cop to see her actions started all this specially since its her son who claimed the gun incident.

very unfortunate..... it is

very unfortunate..... it is horrible that people feel the need to lie to take the spotlight off of them.... how unfortunate that a man took his own life over all this bickering. yes i agree, she did admit to assault.... i dont understand the lack of charges either....

tron's picture

I still see nothing about

I still see nothing about charging Mr. Lord's mother with assault and possibly manslaughter. She started this whole episode, and it appears her son continued it. She should not get away with murder, when she did admit to assaulting Mr. Bussiere. She must be held accountable for THAT action at the very least.
