Friendly's on Sabattus Street in Lewiston closed for good Tuesday night.

Two others in Maine — on Main Street in Freeport and High Street in Ellsworth — also closed Tuesday night.

The restaurants each employed about 20 people, said Friendly's spokesman Rich Tauberman. He said those workers have been encouraged to seek transfers to other Friendly's restaurants.

Six Friendly's remain open in Maine: in Augusta, Brunswick, Portland, South Portland, Waterville and Windham. They are expected to be open for business as usual as the company restructures.

The 76-year-old Massachusetts-based company said in a press release that it filed for Chapter 11 because of the poor economy, increased costs in cream and other goods, high rents and other company liabilities. It closed restaurants that it considered to be under performing.

The company said it had obtained $70 million in financing to help meet its ongoing obligations to the 424 restaurants that remain open nationwide.

unfriendly friendlys

the last time i went there was a fiasco. first they give me the wrong menu, then i couldn't order what i wanted when i did get the right one, i could hear comments from the "cooks" about spitting in my food and using food from the floor and garbage can (their "kitchen" was in the middle of the dining room), when i took my kid to the bathroom one of the "cooks" said "oh looks here comes freak out time", the food was cold when i finally did get it (we were the only customers there at the time), the server was new and got so upset and flustered by us that they had to make her serve us (again, we could hear the conversation) since we were so horrible. good riddence to bad rubbish.

if you want good food and service, go to the local family owned resteraunts. dube's cafe on sabattus street, uncle moes diner in sabattus, chummies diner in lisbon falls, and the settlement in sabattus all have good food and good staff. denny's in auburn is good too, open all night (ya i know it's a chain store, but it's better then friendlys).

Sad

I liked taking my kids there for ice cream and sometimes a meal. Some good memories throughout the years. A really nice young man waited on us the last time we went. I really hope that the employees can all find employment.
