Veteran takes a stand on wind projects in Byron and Roxbury

BYRON — The United States flag holds different meanings for many Americans, but for a 30-year military veteran in Byron the flag represents his right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Submitted

U.S. Army veteran Dan DeRaspe, left, of Garland Pond in Byron and two unidentified men pose with an American flag DeRaspe was permitted to erect on Record Hill in Roxbury near wind turbines. DeRaspe believes his right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness was violated because Garland and Roxbury ponds' scenic views are disrupted by the turbines. "I just wanted my voice to be heard and that flag represents a lot," he said Wednesday.

Dan DeRaspe, who retired as a master sergeant in the Army, resides next to Garland Pond in Byron and is upset over the recent construction of 22 wind turbines in neighboring Roxbury.

"I've been on Garland Pond since I was 14," DeRaspe said. "Now, instead of a view of the mountains, I have to stare at wind turbines."

DeRaspe, with permission from Record Hill Wind and Patriots Renewable LLC, erected American flags at the highest points on Spruce and Record Hill mountaintops. The Spruce Mountain flag was placed Sept. 10 and the Record Hill flag was placed on Oct. 1.

DeRaspe said if he is forced to look at wind turbines, he should be allowed to include something he truly respects.

The flag placed on Record Hill is DeRaspe's burial flag, which is reserved for any veteran who has served in a war. The pole is from a Douglas fir tree that was cut down during construction of the wind project and stands more 30 feet tall.

"This really goes against my pursuit of happiness," DeRaspe said. "I pay taxes in Byron and one of those taxes is a view tax because I live on the water. Now I have to pay to look at wind turbines."

A few Byron residents have attempted to ban wind towers over the past few years. DeRaspe belongs to the movement Byron Landowners Opposing Wind, aka BLOW.

The Record Hill project is in Roxbury but borders Byron and is visible from both Garland and Roxbury ponds.

DeRaspe said he's not 100 percent against wind power but believes the companies could have chosen land that didn't affect so many people who use the area and ponds year round.

"It affects so many people," DeRaspe said. "Win or lose in this debate isn't the point. I just wanted my voice to be heard and that flag represents a lot."

my heart is broken

my heart is broken and the pain is realized every time i come down the hill to Roxbury Pond. These turbines are ugly and so out of place in our part of the state. I, am in favor of alternative energy but alternate sites (such as at the seacoast and in a place where no one would have to see these monstrosities) would have been better than atop our beloved mountains where not only did we have beauty beyond compare but we had abundant wildlife which have already been affected by heavy duty machinery, blasting and disrespect for the land.

I was not born in Maine. I come from Rhode Island where I expect to be screwed by my politicians. I married a man who was born in Maine and we have owned a summer cottage on Roxbury Pond for 35 years and have always adored the serenity, solitude and beauty of our lake. Now, I too, wake up and look out the window and see these massive turbines that will certainly affect the birds and eagles that nest on the lake. I certainly hope that the residents that voted for this travesty are happy with what they have done and they get their $.25 reduction in their electric bill.

Shame on all of you, from the politicians who will be lining their pockets to the residents who voted for this travesty.

Desecration

Thank you for your sentiments, Mr. DeRaspe. You have been grossly violated in the name of greed. I hope you get a tax abatement, but that is not the real issue here. The real issue, and people like Marjorie Grover need to get educated about this, is what a collosal waste of taxpayers money we are throwing away on wind turbines that would never exist without heavy taxpayer subsidies, mandates, and other preferential treatment. Mayjorie, we should not be subsidizing wind power when we have a $14.5 trillion national debt. We shouldn't subsidize any forms of energy. If we stopped the subsidies, the energy dense resources would still provide for our modern day economy, but there wouldn't be a large scale solar array, and industrial wind site, or an ethanol plant ever built, as these are economic follies that don't work effectively. Destoying our mountains by blasting them away, leveling hundreds of thousands of cubic yards of them, and leaving them permanently scarred with machines twice the height of the tallist building in Maine is asinine. Desecrating our unique natural resources of Maine with sprawling industrial wind sites is analogous to desecrating the beloved American flag. You just don't do it!

Flags erected in Byron

I have a lot of respect for the flag and what it represents FREEDOM. However I also believe in wind power as we need to make changes in the United States and try to save money. Wind power is one way to do it. I see nothing wrong with putting turbines on high mountain tops to get the power to prduce electricity for everyone use. Maybe some people do not like to look at them but what one likes someone else does not and you cannot PLEASE everyone in the state of Maine. Learn to live with it.

learn to live with it?

Marjorie, do you have to look at these scars upon the land? i also am in favor of alternative energy but alternate sites would have been better than atop our beloved mountains where not only did we have beauty beyond compare but we had abundant wildlife which have already been affected by heavy duty machinery, blasting and disrespect for the land. Everyones use?????

Maine gets the windmills and Mass. and Canada get the energy (IF
it produces what they want!!) We get NOTHING except those HUGE UGLY
things on our mountain tops ! I have 11 of those in my "VIEW" and
it has ruin my "country" living!! I feel I live in the "CITY" of
Roxbury now... BUT on a good note, I have had MANY people call or stop
me on the street to let me know how SORRY they are for me... Hopefully
the other towns will look at this as a "YIKES" and keep them out of there towns!!
If there were a revote in Roxbury..it would of NEVER passed!!
