Two familiar debates have recently resurfaced: Should a candidate’s religion have any bearing on his or her ability to serve in a public office, and is Mormonism a true form of Christianity or a cult?
As a born-again Christian, I don’t think that a candidate’s faith should matter, although it could, eventually.
But what is Mormonism?
Comparing Christianity and Mormonism, I reached these conclusions:
Christianity: God is a triune being, one god in three persons.
Mormonism: The father was a man who became a god. Jesus Christ and the holy spirit are separate gods. Men can become gods.
Christianity: Jesus Christ, the second person of the trinity, is God. He always existed and he created all things. He “came in the flesh” (was born of a virgin), died on a cross to pay for our sins, and physically rose from the dead in total victory over sin, spiritual death and the devil.
Mormonism: Jesus Christ, a separate god, was born through sexual union and he was married. His death doesn’t provide total atonement for sins. According to church teachings, his younger brother is Lucifer.
Christianity: The holy spirit, the third person of the trinity, is God and he teaches, guides, comforts and dwells in believers.
Mormonism: The “holy spirit,” differing from the “holy ghost,” is a force emanating from God. The “holy ghost," "a personage of spirit,” is referred to as “it.”
While we’re free to choose, we shouldn’t confuse.
David T. Theriault, Rumford
Dave is alright with me
Wow. Some of these comments being made are just running right off the page. Dave did say what faith he came from. He clearly stated he is a born again Christian. Dave is not a Christian because he's a Theriault. He is a Christian because he has accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior and has given himself to God. Nowhere did he state what political party he is affiliated with. Nowhere in his letter did he state that he was for or against Romney. What he clearly did was describe very well the difference between Mormons and Christians. We Christians have enough to argue about because of religions. Religion is a one eyed devil from hell. Christianity is, simply believing in God and that he sent His Son Jesus Christ of Nazareth Who came in the flesh to save us all from sin and the grave. Yep that's right I'm a born again Christian too. Oh by the way I really consider myself a conservative liberal, registered Democrat, voted for the president and most likely will again.

If you admit to being a democrat who voted for obama and would do so again, there is now way on earth that you're a conservative liberal, sir. That is an oxymoron.

I'm a Democrat, a union worker who knows the wages I earn would be small if left up to the people holding the purse. Wages in general in this country would be like Mexico's if it wasn't for unions and the democratic and some of the past republicans we elected. Today the party of "no" who led us into today's present economic mess and are not helping to get us out do not deserve to be elected to any political office. Your avatar speaks volumes for the party you represent. It is ungodly and offensive. It will take a very honest republican who will support the workers and Jesus not the rich whose labor is little and greed that is abundant. This country needs more liberal conservatives. Too far left and you loose sight of God too fat right and your doing the same.

I have no avatar; I am not a republican nor a democrat, and I find your reference to ungodlyness to be offensive in and of itself. However, you have your opinions; I have mine. Isn't that why we come here, or must we all share the same beliefs in order not to be labeled something?

We just elected a president with disregard to the color of his skin. Why should a candidate's religion be so important, unless he's a Mau Mau, or something to that effect.

It's quite simple, really...
Having been born a Theriault, you are Christian.
Had you been born a Pagbalha you would have been been Buddhist, and wondering what the above argument was all about..

I am neither Mormon nor, using Mr. Theriault's orthodox definition, Christian. It is the certitude expressed in the letter and by some commentary that keeps me from considering either. And I'd bet that Jesus of Nazareth would have a difficult time recognizing his philosophy in the practices of today's "Christian" or Mormon" churches.

Its not necessarily Republicans alone who are picking on Romney's religion. Liberal Democrats along with their AP cronies are really at the forefront of that. Progressive Liberals along with their buddies in the press are constantly pulling the race and religion cards.

Mr. Theriault, what is continual vendetta your party has with people who don't share your religion? First your kind try to maintain that President Obama is a Muslim, now you're attacking Romney. Faith is important only in one's life, not in how America is governed. Yet you're making it a crucible for office, which demonstrated you're inability to separate public from private. Your faith could probably be called a cult, since one, and only one religion was established by Jesus while he was here on earth. But I'm not going to judge you on your faith, and you shouldn't judge others on theirs.
