Maine CDC: Time for flu vaccines

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention says flu vaccine is plentiful, and it's encouraging residents to go ahead and get their inoculations.

Everyone 6 months and older is encouraged to get an annual flu vaccine, even if they were vaccinated last year. It's available as a shot or in the form of a nasal spray.

Dr. Sheila Pinette, director of Maine CDC, says that during the last flu season there were 115 influenza-associated pediatric deaths, including one in Maine. She says Mainers should do all they can to protect themselves and loved ones by getting the vaccines.

People at high risk include children 5 and under, adults 65 and older, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems or underlying medical conditions.

Flu Vaccine Immunity Lasts At Least Six Months

Some people hold off on getting the flu vaccine because they mistakenly believe the immunity is good only for three months. I was one of those folks until this year.

I checked with Col. Harriet Hall, MC, USAFR, a retired flight surgeon, who assured me the immunity was good for a minimum of six months. An RN giving shots at the Mexico Wal-Mart said the immunity could last as long as a year.

As confirmed cases of flu have already been reported in New England, now is the time to get the jab, if one wants to.

I am not telling people who don't want the shot at all to get it, but am directing my comments to those who generally get the yearly vaccine.
