FARMINGTON — A woman whose husband was seriously injured after being beat over the head with a flashlight in January said she has seen a different side of military veteran Justin Crowley-Smilek, she said.
Crowley-Smilek, 28, of Farmington was shot by a Farmington officer Saturday outside the Farmington Municipal Building after he confronted the officer with a knife, officials said.
Crowley-Smilek, a disabled veteran, was arrested in January on an aggravated assault charge against Joshua Conkey, who was asleep in his vehicle in a Front Street parking lot in Farmington, police said. On Friday, Crowley-Smilek had been ordered to have a mental evaluation in connection with that case, which was awaiting trial.
Conkey said he had too much to drink and was sleeping in his car parked at the Front Street Tavern parking lot when two men got in and asked for a ride, police Chief Jack Peck said previously. Conkey refused, Peck said, and asked them to leave or he would call 911.
One of the men, Crowley-Smilek, started beating the victim on the head and face, Peck said at the time.
Sonya Conkey, Joshua's wife, said Monday that their hearts go out to the family of Crowley-Smilek.
“I mean no disrespect to them,” she said.
However, she said she knew the havoc he could cause.
Conkey said her husband had just come home from Boston Children's Hospital where their 4-month-old baby was, and he'd learned that their daughter may only live another four months.
He was upset and decided to go have a couple of drinks. He talked to his wife during that time and he went to the car to sleep in the passenger's seat, she said.
Sonya Conkey said he woke up when two people got into his car. One sat in the driver's seat and the other behind him.
He told the men to get out and the one in the front did. Crowley-Smilek, who was in the back seat, she said, used his Surefire tactical flashlight, which has sharp edges, to beat her husband.
“There were 14 marks on my husband,” Conkey said.
He was hit so hard in the face that it broke his glasses and left an indent on his face, she said. He hasn't been able to work since January, she said.
Sonya Conkey said her husband had been hoping the case would go to trial, if Crowley-Smilek did not plead guilty.
She said she has a copy of the police interview with Crowley-Smilek and in it he admitted he beat her husband.
She said after reading reports of police shooting a troubled veteran, she wanted to show there was another side to him.
“He ruined our lives,” Conkey said.

No more excuses
It was NOT lack of training that got this young man killed. It was his actions that got him killed. Lets get that straight. I don't disagree that he needed help, or that the system is flawed for not getting him what he needed. Maybe more of the people who purportedly cared for him should have pushed harder to get him the help that he needed. It probably should have come BEFORE he climbed into an INNOCENT man's car and beat him in the head. It's not Officer Rosie's fault that Justin is dead, and those who are saying that need to get a grip. This is the REAL world, with REAL violence and REAL problems. Wishing it wasn't so doesn't make it that way. The cop did his job...as a friend of Justin's, did you do yours? If you were say, oh, Grace Burton's family...and that man had been shot, would you be upset if he was your friend or relative? I know Justin sacrificed to serve our country, and that he was damaged and hurt. Happens to thousands of men and women all over the world, and they don't act the way he did. Stop excusing it, grieve and move on.

Those who are heartless and Have no motive for being so rude need to get a grip and move on as well, including you. I can State my opinion without someone like you trying to down what many of us are thinking, I didn’t ask for your rebuttal I was placing my comment on the story as i have the right to do. As far as Grace Burton goes, god bless her, she was horrifically stabbed many times and left for dead , That has absolutely nothing to do with this situation, Justin did nothing so wrong that he should have been killed for it, yes it happens all over the world, I understand, but that’s just an unnecessary thing to say when you know his family and friends are reading this& as far as the comment “Stop excusing it, Grieve and move on” I won’t even comment back to that asinine statement. You can only do some much for someone who needs mental help and the court was willing to grant him that the day before this happened, just not in time, so friends& family are not to blame here, This is the REAL world, with REAL violence and REAL cops who makes mistakes with their choice of Weapon. Please don’t turn this into a tacky Facebook page by responding with such ignorance.

I do not understand the point to having this news article? Yes, first of all I completely understand that this woman went through a lot mentally dealing with her husband being injured by Justin, and her husband has gone through even more healing physically, However I find is so very disrespectful that she most likely took the time to write to sun journal and come out with this story again now that he is dead and cannot respond, this is a waste of news, the story has already had its time to shine in the papers. It is done and over with and now we are focused on another Crime, A Murder. Justin did not deserve to die, no matter how many times he’s had “run ins” with the police, or if he’s gotten into fights, He served our country, he did more for the USA then most people will ever think of doing and most “trouble makers” don’t make it past the first test, he suffered mentally because of the sacrifices he made for all of us, Me and my boyfriend are blessed to have known him in his last few months as were many of our other friends, and I can say that he was one of the smartest people I’ve met, he wanted to become a police officer one day but instead was killed by one due to lack of training on officer Rosies end.
