T. Shields: LePage is on right path

I, among many others, have not seen the actual current budget proposal of Gov. Paul LePage. I have seen a lot written by my fellow citizens, most of them severely critical of it. I suspect this criticism is based on what they have been told or read somewhere, and not based on the actual document content. An atmosphere of apprehension has been planted by the Democrats.

How many know the real facts of the situation? And based on those facts, what are the Democrats’ solutions to the problems? It is wasting our time re-hashing the fears which our liberal media are all too glad to print. I prefer constructive solutions. Gov. LePage must balance the budget, a constitutional requirement.

How can we continue to fund the irrational expensive spending the eight-year Baldacci administration left us? LePage inherited that mess and has had only one year to work on it. The Democrats passed unaffordable Medicaid programs which were paid for by withholding funds from our hospitals, and following that, using one-time federal stimulus money.

The answer should not be more taxes.

Gov. LePage is correct in that our Department of Health and Human Services, among other departments, must be reconstructed and he is setting about doing it with the help of the Legislature.

We must live within our means, but care for those who are unable to care for themselves.

Thomas F. Shields, Auburn

More info needed.

I still want to know how we got to this $200 mil shortfall... I love how on WCSH6 interview with him he claims to be able to solve it, but hasn't released the details of what went wrong.

I would like to know how we got into such a hole. And don't reply with comments blaming either administration. This is an appeal for facts, not supposition.

Good question, Jason

The fist six years of Baldacci's administration were prosperous times. Here in Oxford, new manufactured homes were flying off the lots, jobs were plentiful and the state was taking in millions in tax revenue. As all this money rolled in our law makers felt compelled to create new programs to spend it on. Obviously they never heard the expression, "save for a rainy day". Well the rainy day arrived at the beginning of Baldacci's sixth year in office and ,like a lame duck, he just rode it out.
I was never a fan of Baldacci and I see lots of faults in Lepage, but this whole mess is now on his lap.
I will continue to criticize some of his plans, but man, has he inherited a hell of a mess. A mess not created by Democrats or Republicans, a mess created by both parties who didn't have the foresight to plan for tough times ahead. Simple as that. What do you think?

The last legislature enacted

The last legislature enacted a tax cut of $150 million each year, THAT is why we're here.

what?

Dan, the 124th Legislature did not do that. What are you talking about?

tron's picture

your clan will be proud of you today, but you got me. Yes it was the last legislative SESSION that gave you and your clan the massive tax cuts. And just to be certain we're all on the same page, it was the REPUBLICANS who deprived the state of revenues needed to keep the elderly and disabled taken care of.

so wrong

Dan, I just didn't get you today. I have gotten you multiple times.

Hey, offer still stands, contact Patti if you think that the Obama's daughters were not listed as senior staffers and she can ban the user that was wrong or we can just mark that up as one of the times you were proven WRONG by me AGAIN. So, I guess you can just go on defending the scrupulous Keynesian President.

Just looked it up

See, this crap is why politics is so messed up.

ABC news covered the White House response to the blog's FOIA request for the bill for the trip in question. Read it here:

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/10/wh-says-judicial-watch-wron...

Example - Taking things out of context. The Air Force catagorizes people by where they sit and what they have access to. The daughters were obviously with the Senior Staff, so that's how they were listed:

Judicial Watch says that Sasha and Malia Obama are listed as “Senior Staff.”
Not true, says the White House.
“The Obama daughters were not listed as Senior Staff – that only designates the area of the plane where they were seated,” says the official. “The Air Force categorizes the passengers by compartment on the plane.”

too bad

Heck, if Dan had done some research, he could of produced the same, but instead, he just post and leaves it to you to prove his case.

Well then I guess the offer is off the table, sorry Dan. Maybe next time you bite.

Heck I have better things to

Heck I have better things to do than run down specious arguments, especially when it had NOTHING to do with the topic at hand, i.e. lepage hiring and paying his own daughter to sit on a chair. Plus your bet was meaningless, because you would never honor you part. You're just a troublemaker, who need affirmation from your clan. You've got it, enjoy.

Let me Guess....

Can we rewrite Dr. Shields' letter this way??

How can we continue to fund the irrational expensive spending the eight-year Baldacci Bush administration left us? LePage Obama inherited that mess and has had only one three year/s to work on it.

Me'thinks the Good Doctor would be crying up a storm if we brought up Bush's Spend-A-Thon, Wars, TARP, and Global Financial Meltdown.

There's a big difference.

Unlike Obama, LePage has not made worse everything he has touched. Well, he has upset the tummy of every leftist in the state and some outside. Keep up the good work, Paul.

Right Path????

Tommie Shields continues his long career of letters to the editor peppered with Republican palitudes and no facts at all. "The answer should not be more taxes." Why not. When you have a budget problem everything has to be on the table. To say we can't consider revenues is really to say that nothing government does is worthwhile or you just don't care. That's absurd.
The Baldacci Administration had to balance the budget each year just like LePage and as I remember many of those years had much more serious structural budget shortfalls than anything LePage has seen. Baldacci did not throw serior citizens and the disabled out in the street to pay for those shortfalls. Nor do I see any evidence of "irrational expensive spending" or spending we can afford.
What Republicans want and we have seen this in the state and nationally is the poor, disabled, and underpaid 99% to pay for the luxury that the 1% enjoy. The 1% have more than doubled their real income in the last 30 years while the rest of us have seen our income shrink not because of the 1%'s innovation, creativity or improvements in productivity but by theft, fraud, and changing the laws to make us pay for their luxuries. Time to put a stop to it.

Welcome back, Jon!

I'll repeat myself, there

I'll repeat myself, there would be NO shortfall if lepage and the republicans did NOT given their cronies and tax bonanza during the last session. You can tell Dr. Shields is retired, he already got his, now he doesn't want anyone else to get anything.

I've extrapolated from the people you associate with here, so I have a very good idea who your 'cronies' are. However, there are always the possibility that some people with limited good abilities who might consider themselves your 'crony' who you exploit and ridicule. Come to think of it, that convenience store clerk probably is one of them, but he probably considers you a crony only because he's forced to. Anyways, I hope you and your cronies enjoy your caviar while an elderly person eats dog food, while you laugh about it.

in reality, I associate more with you and Al than anyone else on here so, welcome to the club buddy! Now that you're a member, maybe I can get one of my friends to give you a retail job for 20k so you can join the ranks of the "wealthy" and take advantage of the "tax bonanza" we just got!

Well...

...Mark, you could offer but Dan doesn't want any job you would offer him & you know why. Furthermore, He will never thank you for the revinues you contribute to the state tax base because he wants more. Dan uses terms like "cronies" and "ilk" and "clan" because he has created a narrative about you created in self-deception to validate himself. Never once have I seen, in all the hundreds of Dan Breton's post, him show gratitude towards a system and a people that provide him the standard of living that he appreciates today.

tron's picture

And during the decades that I

And during the decades that I was working, I never received any appreciation from anyone who benefited from the taxes I paid, and I didn't expect any. I was raised to do my best and to look out for those less fortunate, and not treat them with the disdain that you and yours do, because someday I may be one of those less fortunate. Apparently, my upbringing vastly surpasses yours, in my view.

tron's picture

Enough, you're just being

Enough, you're just being argumentative. We both know who your 'cronies' are, and frankly I and the convenience store clerk aren't among them. Again you're trying to put words in my mouth, I've never stated that a person earning 20K is 'wealthy'. We ALL know that you and your cronies are in the wealthy category, which is fine. You probably inherited it or 'knew' someone who greased the skids for you. That's the America you and yours live in, the rest of us just want an equal footing, something you and your 'cronies' don't believe it. We have different values. You take one true statement, and try to dismiss it by going off on a tangent. I'll repeat myself, if lepage and the republicans had NOT given their cronies the tax bonanza during the last session, we would not be discussing throwing the elderly and disabled out into the street to freeze and starve. I think that's wrong, you think it's OK as long as you get a couple of bucks more a week. There's no way we'll ever see eye to eye on this, so good night and enjoy your caviar.

Dan, when "wealthy" is officially defined as being someone making $19950.00 or more per year, then we will see eye to eye on the tax issue.........there is hope!

Woah there.

I agreed with how your letter started. I do think we adopt an us vs them attitude, labeling things without even understanding them. Far too often, we ready someone's opinion of what a law or budget or whatever will do, and then start arguing about it blindly.

But then you do it yourself. You admit you don't know whats in the budget, but then dismiss concerns held by many purely as fabrications of the "Liberal Media".

Blanket statments like "The answer should not be more taxes." also don't help. The answer is what works for a majority of Mainers. If that includes tax increases, then so be it. The moment you shut a door, your limiting yourself.
