Central Maine Power is winding down the installation of its so-called "smart meters" in the Lewiston-Auburn area while many consumers are unaware of the possible health hazards.
The meters emit a high frequency RF/microwave radiation and, in May, the World Health Organization classified wireless radiation as a Class 2B possible carcinogen, the same category as lead, engine exhaust and the pesticide DDT. There are abundant testimonials from people who are experiencing symptoms of headaches, dizziness, insomnia, fatigue, nausea and heart palpitations.
Municipalities and public officials across the country are coming out against deployment of these meters. In California, 40 communities have banned or slowed or criminalized the installation of smart meters.
It is important for Mainers to be aware that they have the right to request their meter be removed with replacement of the old analog meter as part of the opt-out program created by the Public Utilities Commission. CMP will penalize the homeowner with a one-time $40 fee, and an additional $12 monthly fee, but it is well-worth the health of one's family.
We would encourage everyone to do their own research and decide if these "menacing meters" are smart.
Normand and Suzanne Renaud, Lewiston

Two questions:
1) If oBAMaCare is such a great idea, why does the bill call for a fine to be levied on those who choose not to participate?
2) If smart meters are such a good idea, why is CMP punishing those who choose not to participate in their program by charging $40 up front plus $12 a month for keeping their existing meter. Extortion comes to mind.
Historically, great ideas usually result in people lining up in droves to participate. Mandatory participation or punishment for nonparticipation is cause for one to wonder if these are such great ideas after all.

There are two sides to every story. Please visit "smartmetersafety.org" and you will get the full story. Many people may not get sick right away, however, people who had compromised immune systems such as MS, lupus, fibromyalgia, etc. are very much affected. I personally listened to many people testify in front of the state legislature who had absolutely no agenda and tell how ill they became once the meters were put on their house. They have no agenda but what do you think the agenda is for CMP. It is not to save us money but it is a moneymaker for them. Read what is happening in California, Nevada, Florida, etc. Whereever the meters are being installed, there are people screaming to get them removed. I would believe an average citizen before a large monopoly whose only reason for existence is to make money. I have heard many physicians testify how unsafe these meters are. Because some people are not affected doesn't mean that it is so for the whole population. The RF radiation is much higher than a cell phone.

Good point, Sue:
You have to know that if CMP thinks it's a good idea, it's because it's a good idea for THEM; screw the ratepayers.

1. The amount of RF is less than you get from standing next to a wireless phone or wifi device. You get more RF from a cell phone. Plus, you have a wall that limits it even more.
2."headaches, dizziness, insomnia, fatigue, nausea and heart palpitations"- These symptoms can be attributed to millions of causes, including freaking out needlessly about smart meters.

We paid the $40 up front and we pay the extra $12 a month. I take great pleasure in knowing our electric bill is still lower than our neighbors and we are helping someone to keep a job. The new "smart" meters measure infinite amounts of usage that the old analog ones do not. I don't know why this is so except maybe all the appliances with "instant on" get metered even though their usage is very small.
CMP will come and change the frequency of the meter if you are getting interference on your TV. My neighbor had this done. I have read that "smart" meters also screw up garage door openers and security systems.

1. How long did you compare the two meters side-by-side to determine the "infinite amount of usage" measured by the new meters and how is your electric bill lower when you're being charged an addition $12 a month for nothing?
2. Where did you read smart meters screw up garage door openers and security systems and how reliable was that source? It's not National Enquirer reliable, is it?

It's very obvious you haven't done your research on these meters. Let me give you 2 websites that will lead you in the right direction. Unless, of course, you want big technology and welcome big brother and all that entails. Some of this info might be dated as it has been out there quite awhile for those curious about what all the hoopla was about.

Yes, those sites seem to be unbiased sources... Have them submit their findings to the Maine PUC. If they can back up their claims, the Maine PUC will take action...

I was thinking the same thing Bob. Most of the folks complaining probably have 2-3 wireless laptops used around the house as well as 2-3 cordless phones........all it takes to create a panic is a small "seed" and some "water". The "seed" being one complaint and the "water" being the media.....

That face mask is worn to protect the installers face, in case of an electrical arc flash; which could occur during the process of removing the old meter or installing the new meter. This safety precaution is done irregardless of the type of meter being installed.
