Lewiston standoff investigation closed; no charges expected

LEWISTON — Police said the case is closed and no charges are expected following a police standoff that ended in suicide earlier this month.

Daniel Bussiere, 49, fatally shot himself with a hunting rifle shortly after midnight on Sept. 3 after he holed up in his first-floor apartment at 163 Holland St. for more than 20 hours. Evacuated buildings in the area left throngs milling around the streets for hours.

A statement from his neighbor, Justin Lord, 21, of 2 Towle St., prompted police to secure a warrant for Bussiere's arrest that day. Lord told police that Bussiere had threatened him with a handgun that morning. Police never found a handgun and kept the case open while investigating the truthfulness of Lord's statement.

Police again interviewed Lord, who stood by his statement, police said Friday. There was no evidence and were no witnesses that contradicted his statement, police said.

A property manager at Bussiere's apartment building told the Sun Journal last week that police were notified that Lord had entered Bussiere's apartment a day after the standoff. A painter apparently heard Lord talk about what he saw inside the apartment. The manger said Lord told tenants he took a bandanna from Bussiere's truck as a souvenir.

A day before the standoff, Lord's brother Sidney, 19, told police Bussiere had threatened him with a handgun while he was in his truck. Police searched Bussiere's truck and found no handgun, but issued a summons on a charge of possession of marijuana.

Two days before the standoff, Bussiere was involved in an argument with the brothers' mother, Deborah Brown. He was cited for disorderly conduct.

Lt. Mark Cornelio said the case might be reopened if new information warrants it.

well this is pearle again, cant say enough bad abour justin ,and every word is truth!there is a history of domestic abuse that dates way back. I work for the landlord of Dan and had many conversations with him, he was very friendly to me and an extremely hard worker around the yard, and he worked like two people keeping himself busy doing the things he enjoyed. He was the type of person that would never let you go talking about this and that until you told him that you were busy and had to go, What I really came here to say is that Dan was a great guy and will be truly missed by us and many others who knew him. This along with many other things will come back to haunt Justin in his lifetime, from what I’ve been reading about him beating on his girlfriend is just wrong and he needs to be stopped before someone else gets killed!!!

At first I thought Tron may have been drunk due to some of his posts today, but I now realize he suffers from a more serious condition known as SECTION 8. Third, Dan Bussiere controlled the situation. Could have come out anytime and the standoff would have been over with. If he was on medication, it was his or his families responsibility to ensure that he was taking medication.
Fourth, if the Maine State Police, (they were actually in charge of the scene) or the LPD did NOTHING and Bussiere actually had a gun , used it to shoot somebody in the building, asshats like tron would have to bitch about that.
The cops are screwed either way, by the justice system that slaps defendants on the buttocks, telling them to go, and sin no more.
Or criticized by the likes of citizens and welfare recipients that have no clue what the job entails.

People are amazing, how can anyone blame stuff on LPD? If they arrest you they are wrong, if they arrest a friend they are wrong, they give you a ticket or question someone you know they are wrong, it does not seem that people that stay out of trouble complain much about LPD!! Maybe before people complain about what the police department is doing or how they work maybe they should look into the inner selves! You have to remember that people with different mental illnesses do not comprehend situations the way people with out mental illnesses do. You are right that the LPD did what they could. The economy is terrible and even if it weren't the council should be looking for places to cut, here is the perfect place, Skip the scalpel and break out the chain saw. If the Lewiston police can not find evidence in statements (confesions) made to the press, recorded,broadcast, printed and witnesssed they don't deserve a job. Looks like Dan had it exactly right, he knew who to fear, the Leiston Police bunglers who cant conduct a proper investigation and the State police who don't look to see what they are being brought into, have a clue how to handle a crisis situation or how to properly and safely use there equipment (inserting lethal levels of tear gas). Criminals can rest easy and go about their business with a great deal lf confidence knowing law enforcement is on their side. Every law abiding citizen in Maine and especially in Lewiston needs to be concerned for the safety of themselves and their loved ones from harm at the very hands we pay to protect us in addition to the criminals we now know are under their protection.
