What did you say?

The Sun Journal editorial of Sept. 8 about Maine Medical Association's rejection of their resolution concerning the health effects of wind turbines was so convoluted that although I had attended one of their meetings I couldn't understand the editorial board's view or theirs on the issue.

The editorial stated that if the MMA should resolve anything at all, it should be that dismissing the possible health effects of turbines without examining the facts and/or studying new data would be foolhardy.

The editorial implied that studying the situation as soon as possible would be a good course of action because construction of industrial-size wind turbines is occurring across Western Maine.

But what was their resolution? The editorial stated that nothing was decided. Surely "nothing" is not the good course of action that the editorial advised.

A. Ingrid Eriksson M.D., Sumner

Editor's Note: The editorial of Sept. 8 said the MMA should resolve to encourage studies of potential health effects from wind turbines as soon as possible.

I am on the Planning Board

I am on the Planning Board for our town. We are currently looking at an ordinance for wind turbines. The town to our north and to our south are both looking at ordinances as well. Their boards are both looking at 1 mile set backs. We are also considering a 1 mile set back. For the record, I will be about 2 miles from the turbines. When we started this process, I thought 1000ft would be fine. With the more research I have been doing, the more I realize that these things don't belong in someone's backyard.
We had a presentation where a sound expert presented a recording of a turbine. The recording was done inside a home 1800ft away from a turbine. The sound level inside a home at night is about 25 - 30 dba. The sound of the wind turbine was 52 dba. That is equivalent to a normal conversion 3-5 feet away. The lowest ambient sound levels in a urban area is 40dba. These turbines are going in rural areas and the lowest ambient sound levels in a rural area is about 25 dba.
It is not the noise of the turbines that is the issue, but the noise that the blades make as they cut through the air. The speed of the wind mill tips are moving at about 6 times the incoming wind speed.
I have been researching Industrial Wind for the past year for our town.

How does wind and air hurt

How does wind and air hurt humans? Or is it the possibility of a turbine falling over onto someone? I don't quite understand.

Lets see---No Nukes, no

Lets see---No Nukes, no foreign oil, no drilling in the Artic, no elecrical lines, no fossil fuels, no wind? Let these whiny NIMBY's go without power for a while---then maybe they'll have something to complain about. We're never gonna please 'em anyway, so might as well go ahead and do the sensible things.. If they say NO to everything, what is THEIR freakin' solution??? That's something you dont hear.....

I'm sure if there were any

I'm sure if there were any harmful effects to humans, other than being chained to a turbine tower for a year, the NIMBY's and tree huggers would be screaming bloody murder. I haven't seen any high profile studies showing harmful effects from the turbines, which have been in use in other countries and out west for quite a while now. There is one doctor in Maine who has expressed an opinion they are harmful, but everyone has an opinion good, bad, truthful or not. I would have one in my yard if I lived in an area which had enough wind.
