LePage's communications director stepping down

AUGUSTA — Peter Rogers, Gov. Paul LePage's communications director, said Wednesday he will leave his post later this month.

Rogers, a 1981 graduate of Edward Little High School, took on the job July 25. The Yarmouth resident said he was resigning to pursue other opportunities in either public relations or security.

"I have a couple of irons in the fire but nothing definitive yet," Rogers said.

He is the governor's second communications director. He filled the vacancy left by former director Dan Demeritt, who resigned in April 2011. Demeritt, who joined LePage's gubernatorial campaign in the final months before the election, stepped down to deal with financial matters.

Rogers said he knew his assignment with the governor would be temporary.

"I was asked to come in and help," he said. "I did it because I believe in the governor and what he's trying to do."

Rogers said his opinion of LePage hasn't changed. He acknowledged that the job has been challenging.

"There were days when I worked 15 hours and still wished there was more time to get things done," he said.

Prior to serving under LePage, Rogers most recently worked for Maj. Gen. John Libby, head of the Maine Army National Guard. Rogers was deputy commissioner of Veterans and Emergency Management for two years.

Prior to that, he ran the Lewiston and Biddeford state offices for U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine.

Rogers is a 22-year U.S. Army combat arms officer, having served both on active duty and with the Maine National Guard. He served several posts at the Maine Military Academy. He was also lead spokesman for the Maine National Guard during the Gulf War and the war on terrorism.

A Sysphean task if there ever was one.

Being LeRage's communications director must be akin to being Mel Gibson's publicist. *shudder*

I'm in my own personal Tartarus . . .

. . . for misspelling Sisyphean. I'm sure Prometheus would understand, though. ("Mmmmm . . . liver." -Homer Simpson)

...

Mr Rogers will be replaced by a rabid wolverine, It is expected that the wolverine will be better capable of relating to the governor, and taming the perception people have of the administration throughout the state. Attempts to fill the position with a Tasmanian Devil proved unsuccessful.
