Paul Bedard of Auburn chants, "President Paul, President Paul, President Paul" with a standing-room-only crowd at Androscoggin County's Republican caucus at Geiger Elementary School in Lewiston on Saturday.

“The fundamental fabric of this country is being challenged,” Paul told attendees of the Androscoggin County Republican Caucus.

It was his second time in Lewiston in two weeks.

“We’re bankrupt," he said. "We can’t afford what we’re doing any longer. This is the reason that this election is so significant, because we can’t just keep patching it over.”

The crowd of several hundred roared approval at Paul’s mention of many familiar topics of his libertarian-flavored campaign. Their loudest cheers came when Paul said, “We should never go to war without a declaration” from Congress.

He also condemned what he called “a deeply flawed monetary system” and called for “a full audit of the Federal Reserve” which would “get us back to a sound currency.”

Paul said in an interview that the answer to high fuel costs in the Northeast is to “get government out of the way.”

He said, “Any shortage we have right now, especially in energy, is a creature of government interfering with the marketplace to deliver.”

Paul had hoped to see his first win in Maine but lost to challenger Mitt Romney when statewide caucus results were announced. He did win Androscoggin County.

Other speakers at Geiger Elementary School included Maine Senate President and 2nd District Congressional candidate Kevin Raye, R-Perry; Maine Attorney General William Schneider; Maine Turnpike Authority Executive Director and former state Sen. Peter Mills; and John C. Turner of the Maine State Housing Authority.

A Romney win? Not so

A Romney win? Not so fast
Check out the results of the Caucus or lack of them.

Washington County's caucus was cancelled due a snow storm of 3-4 inches
which turned out to be a dusting. In fact a girl scout meeting took place as scheduled. So why did the postpone Washington County?
Because officials in the Romney campaign knew it was heavily favored to go Ron Paul. So they somehow convinced the Maine GOP to postpone the Caucus. In doing so it skewed the results to make it appear that Romney won but in reality it's not so simple. Romney won by 194 or so votes. The expected results from the Washington County Caucus would have given Paul at least this amount. So if the results from the Washington County Caucus had been factored Paul would've been declared the victor. So we should wait until the results from Washington County come in before declaring anyone the winner, right? Not according to GOP Chair Charlie Webster. In fact he was quoted as saying that when the results from Washington County are tallied it won't change a thing as the won't be counted.
This is wrong on so many levels it defies logic.
Well the silver lining in all this is that it appears that Ron Paul will win most of the Delegates for the state but if the state GOP is pulling stunts like this now, One can only imagine what they have planned for the Convention in May

Ron Paul refuses to concede Maine - Official Campaign release!

ON PAUL OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE SHOWS PAUL CAMPAIGN REFUSES TO CONCEDE SECOND PLACE FINISH IN MAINE:

PAUL CAMPAIGN COMMENTS ON MAINE RESULTS
"Ron Paul will win the most delegates out of Maine tonight"

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – Tonight the campaign of 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul sent an email to supporters regarding today’s caucus results from the state of Maine. See below for a portion of comments from Ron Paul 2012 Campaign Manager John Tate.

“Ron Paul will win the most delegates out of Maine tonight.

“In fact, he will probably even win the ‘beauty contest’ straw poll the media has already called for Mitt Romney – even before all the votes have been tallied.

“In Washington County – where Ron Paul was incredibly strong – the caucus was delayed until next week just so the votes wouldn’t be reported by the national media today.

“Of course, their excuse for the delay was ‘snow.’

“That’s right. A prediction of 3-4 inches – that turned into nothing more than a dusting -was enough for a local GOP official to postpone the caucuses just so the results wouldn’t be reported tonight.

“This is MAINE we’re talking about. The GIRL SCOUTS had an event today in Washington County that wasn’t cancelled!

“And just the votes of Washington County would have been enough to put us over the top.

“This is an outrage. But our campaign is in this race to win, and will stay in it to the very end.

“Congressman Paul’s message of liberty and Constitutional principles is resonating with Americans everywhere who are sick and tired of the status quo establishment, and we plan to take this campaign on to ‘Super Tuesday’ and beyond.”
