K. Lawler: Keep a civil tongue

I believe that all the presidents, regardless of party and differences, deserve the public’s respect.

How fortunate we are, to live in a country that allows free speech, and allows us to voice our differences and opinions.

Should we, then, abuse that right by calling the president a Marxist, a statist, a socialist and communist as William Van Tassel did in his letter (Feb. 11)?

As a Christian who quotes passages from the Bible (that fit his own agenda), as he accuses the president of doing the same, as he quotes God, speaking through Paul — “If any would not work, neither should he eat,” — Van Tassel must realize that there are different circumstances. He might have also read the passages saying, “Heal the sick, help the poor, feed the hungry,” and “Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me.”

What is happening to the nation? Politicians play political games, in excess, to make sure that the government doesn’t work.

The name-calling has a far-reaching effect and the people are already concerned with sick minds and terrorists in this country.

I hope many have read about Ike Libby of Dixfield, who delivered oil to those struggling to heat their homes (Feb. 11). That was a heart-warming story. His greatest reward is how he has inspired others with a real life lesson.

Danny, you and a few others ...

... are in dangerously serious denial. US journalists - the last time that label could be used with a straight face - shredded their remaining dignity during the Nixon administration. Granted that he deserved personal disrespect, but opinion dispensers seized on Watergate like the junkyard dogs they were, and blooded the entire profession.

The change was sealed in the 90s when some dope of a "journalist" asked: Are they boxers or briefs? The bigger dope, Slick Willie, actually answered the question. He should have told the questioner to pound sand. He didn't and at that point there was no respect left for the office or the office holder.

When GWB came in, daily you tolerant "liberals" compared him to Hitler or worse, and wished for his immediate death, as painful as possible. You can't deny it. It's recorded.

Now you get your panties all twisted if anyone refuses to drop to his knees and smooch BHO posterior. You have only yourselves to blame.

Presidents like everyone else

Presidents like everyone else don't 'deserve' respect; they have to earn it. The current occupant of the presidency does a poor job of earning respect from anyone other than the blindest of the blind.

Do you really think his being

Do you really think his being re-elected is going to cause the people who hate him now to like him after he's re-elected? Really? You can't be that naive; but, on second thought, maybe you are.

Ahhh, but it's a legacy that might just save our country from this tyrant. For the first time since Nixon, America has had a ruler rather than a President of the people.

Did you and your ilk really

Did you and your ilk really think that after 8 years of Bush bashing, and calling him every name imaginable by your 'respected party leaders', Pelosi and Reid, that there would be no backlash at the next democrat to be elected president? Did you really think that?

PAUL ST JEAN's picture

Your little racist comment

Your little racist comment did not go unnoticed. As I've said many times, the color of the man's skin is the only thing about him that I do not find offensive. America was ready for a black man to be president. Unfortunately, they elected the wrong one.

You're right; oBAMa's getting

You're right; oBAMa's getting all the respect he deserves, which is none. You and your ilk hated George Bush--we get that. But, you and your ilk go over the top whenever any of the opposition shows any level of dislike for your boy. How does that work?

I've read Marx and to call

I've read Marx and to call Obama a Socialist is an insult to Socialism. At least Marx proposed a society where everyone worked for the common good, not just heaping the responsibility on a shrinking working class.

I agree with this letter.

It's too bad we didn't see more like it from Jan 2001 through Jan 2009, when the names slung daily made 'communist' seem tame. Maybe I missed a letter from Ms. Lawler back then. I must have because, if she didn't write one, it makes this one a wee bit hypocritical.

i am hoping and praying the the problems of this country can be fixed, but with each passing day my doubt grows stronger. i talk to many people in my line of work and hear their pleading for change but all we get is gridlock and requests for political party contributions. time for the working man to force change.

And that is why

I donated money to Ike Libby and prayed for the salvation of William van Tassel's soul...

I can buy into the donation

I can buy into the donation to Ike Libby matter, but did you really do that other thing?

(After I damned him a few times) Perhaps it was a guilt reaction..... ;)
