R. Lee Jr.: Trim Legislature

If Gov. Paul LePage, State Treasurer Bruce Poliquin and legislative leaders are serious about less government and saving Maine taxpayers money, they could begin by working at reducing the size of the Legislature.

In this world of high-tech communication, why does Maine, with one of the smallest populations, need one of the largest legislatures in the country?

What are the budget priorities?

Richard H. Lee Jr., Turner

The population of California ...

... is 29 times the population of Maine, but Maine's house of representatives is nearly twice the size of California's state assembly. Why do Maine people need so much more "government"?

See the discussion under this other letter for contrasting views on what government should "give" people. We get the government we deserve.

Legislators

Funny when it comes to reducing government or doing anything about reducing the mess our government is in no one has the authority to do it. How did this country and this state get the problems we are now having? Somehow a bill gets to the Governor's or the President's desk and if he signs it or don't sign it he slits his own throat. No one asks where these "pork bills" come from. These legislators got there somehow. You can be hired but not fired? What a deal. Congress can decide that those on SS don't need a raise but can't do it to themselves cause "its already on the books" Again "who put it there" Sure like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse to me.
