N. Willard: Keep religion, state, separate

I will begin with a quote from Ulysses S. Grant: “Religion belongs at the family altar, the church and the private school supported entirely by private contributions. Keep the church and the state forever separate.”

That is the foundation of U.S. democracy. Yet the religious right constantly attacks the rest of us with their pious religious views. The Bible is a wonderful book, but it does not control the lives of all of us.

People who share my religion view planned parenthood (contraception and abortion) as saying to a soul, “Wait for a better opportunity.” We do not believe that is “killing babies.”

Having a baby and raising a child is an awesome responsibility. It takes maturity and desire to perform as a parent. Parenting does not have to be by “one man and one woman” — single parents and same-sex couples have been very successful in providing loving, nurturing homes. The worst scenario for a baby is to be born unwanted.

Contrary to what some of those who are against gay unions believe, people who are gay have no desire to teach gayness to children. They only ask to be treated equally, with the right to share their lives with the ones they love.

I end with a quote from the prophet, Kahlil Gibran: “A little while, and my longing shall gather dust and foam for another body. A little while, a moment of rest upon the wind, and another woman shall bear me.”

Nancy Willard, Woodstock

“They only ask to be treated

“They only ask to be treated equally, with the right to share their lives with the ones they love.”

Who is stopping people from sharing their lives with the ones they love? Is someone physically separating them?

I believe there is a way of separating church and state other then taking religion out of everything. Taking prayer out of school and taking down the Ten Commandants from all public buildings shouldn't have anything to do with separation of church and state. People still continue to break them. Kids said a morning prayer in school since the beginning of time and no one ever was hurt by it but some have now decided that that is not good for kids. Well as Dr. Phil would say "How's that working for you?" Kids are growing up now with no respect for God or country. I am not saying you don't have a right to your own religion but taking away mine does not make yours better or right. A few moments of silence or you can say your own prayer or say nothing but at least be respectful of the right to do it. If you want to live in this country and enjoy the freedom of doing so then the ways that were in place is why it is a free country and that flag that we pledge was fought for lives lost for and should at all times be respected and not allowed to be desecrated without penalty. If this is not the way you want to live part of the freedom here is your right to leave. Each person has the right not to like some things that go on and that is their right to do so.

Nancy, Christianity is under constant attack by the intolerant left, but hey, whatever helps you sleep at night. If you want to get an abortion, go for it, but do not force me to pay for it. If you want to marry another woman, go for it, but do not force me to believe that it is normal. Personal responsibility goes a long way, too bad it is lost on most of todays society.
