LEWISTON — An advertisement alleging that gay marriage will be taught in schools unless the new law allowing same-sex marriages is repealed this fall is being refuted by education officials.
"Seeing as there is nothing in Maine education law or rule that even
mentions marriage, I think it's quite unlikely that changing the rules
about marriage would encourage anyone to change what they are teaching
in the classroom," said David Connerty-Marin, spokesman for the Maine
Department of Education.
The television ad, paid for by the Stand for Marriage Maine campaign, features a couple from Massachusetts, Robb and Robin Wirthlin. They tell the story of how their 7-year-old son's teacher read a book to the class about one prince marrying another prince.
"We knew that (same-sex marriage) was legal in Massachusetts; we just didn't know there would be teachers promoting it in school," said Robin Wirthlin during a conference call with reporters. The Wirthlins filed an unsuccessful lawsuit aimed at stopping public schools from teaching about gay marriage.
Heidi Guarino, chief of staff for the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, said parents have an opt-out option and the department encourages schools to be flexible. She said she had not heard complaints from parents echoing the concerns of the Wirthlins.
The ad also features Charla Bansley, an English teacher at a private Christian school in Orrington, though she is only identified in the commercial as a teacher from Ellsworth, which is where she lives.
"If (the bill allowing same-sex marriage) becomes law, it takes away more rights than it gives, the right to religious freedom and parental control," she said to reporters. "It's true that (the bill) doesn't specifically mention education, but neither did the Massachusetts law."
Bansley is also the Maine state director for a group called Concerned Women for America. She has been speaking out against the bill for months.
When asked if she was getting paid by the campaign, spokesman Scott Fish said, "I think not, but I don't know for sure."
Jesse Connolly, campaign manager for the No on 1/Protect Marriage Equality campaign, said schools already deal with the fact that children come to school from families with different beliefs.
"To say that gay marriage is going to be taught in school is totally, 100 percent false in my opinion," he said. "There are gay and lesbian families in Maine that have kids in public schools, so if you're asking if those families are already acknowledged in the classroom or by teachers, then I would say yes. But that has nothing to do with this campaign or this bill."
Connerty-Marin said the state has broad guidelines for what must be taught in public schools; local school boards are responsible for creating specific curricula.
"There is nothing that would prohibit a teacher — two years ago, 10 years ago or a year from now — from reading a book to your child that you don't like," he said. "Your recourse would be to talk to your child's teacher, principal, superintendent or school board and ultimately work to change policies or change the people who sit on that school board if you don't agree with those."
Lewiston School Committee Chairman Thomas Shannon said that when local concerns arise, the committee tries to work with parents to provide the "best educational experience for students."
"Nobody is here to force somebody's beliefs on someone else," he said. He added that issues dealing with "gender-specific things" are going to come up at some point, regardless of the outcome of this fall's referendum on the gay marriage law.
"I want every student to be able to be comfortable in school and if the use of a textbook is offensive to a family, I certainly believe that a teacher could find a different book to support the lesson," Shannon said.
He said parents have the right to pull their children out of lessons or discussions in which they don't want them to participate.
Frank Schubert, a consultant hired by the Stand for Marriage Maine campaign, said it is a concern that the people of Maine must rely on local school boards to make curriculum decisions.
"The local school boards will have tremendous influence, obviously, over the curriculum," he said. "That means it is out of the hands of parents, out of the hands of voters on a statewide basis and that is a concern and it's certainly something people need to be aware of."
Fish, spokesman for the Stand for Marriage Maine campaign, said, "If there's ever been a group or governmental entity unresponsive to parents, it's school boards."

Same sex marriage is not being shoved down anyone's throat. It's called tolerance. It's called civics. It's called being aware of the world around you. Why can't two people who care for each other be bonded for life or for as long as they can stand each other. If marriage were so sacred in this country the divorce rate would be extremely low but it is not. Statistics bear out that on average 41-50% of first marriages end in divorce, 60-67% of second marriages end in divorce and 70-74% according to The Forest Institute and The enrichment Journal and is in step with the National Center for Health Statistics. For all of those bible quoting zealots why is it that "traditional" marriage is such a failure.
Let's use this so called definition of marriage that is used to disparage same sex marriage as a bellwether to point out the hypocrisy of those who use it as such...The Catholic Church defines marriage as such...Marriage, by definition, is a lifelong union between one man and one woman. The key word here is lifelong. The word lifelong is dropped when used to attack the idea of same sex marriage. It would appear that the bible is more useful as a tool of vengeance, abuse and hate mongering than as a tool of love and inclusion.
There is a reason why the Catholic Church is having to close church after church in Maine and around the Country and I think that this very topic is a shining example of why. Hate, divisiveness and derision are not the tools that build an organization or a business. Inclusion, diversity, and tolerance are what grow an organization and a business. Make no mistake the Catholic Church is a business complete with a head office, tourist chotchkes, company bi-laws, K-Street lobbyists and a board of directors.
When do we run into the catholics who are truly Catholic? The ones who love their fellow man regardless of any attribute they may have obvious or otherwise. It is not a coincidence that many of the same voices that attacked the migration of Somalis to our area are the same voices that attack same sex marriage.
The world is changing, our communities are changing, and the morals, mores and folkways of our country are ever evolving and changing. It is time to recognize that we live in a global community. The Catholic Church has evolved and changed over the centuries and it will change again. It has to in order to survive.
There are plenty of gay people who would sit in a pew and hear "the word of God" if they were welcomed to but they are not. Truth be it is the word of their fellow man that excludes them not the word of God and strange how the Church sees no problem or hypocrisy nor do the so called Catholics in taking money from homosexuals when it serves to enrich the Church or it's projects.
It's time to stop opposing everything for the sake of opposing it. It's time to stop getting your news and information from a single source. The Fox News Channel is one place to get news and information, use it in conjunction with all the other sources available including ABC, CBS, NBC, BBC, CNN, MSNBC, The Sun Journal, Time, Newsweek, US News, Vanity Fair, Mother Jones, and the list goes on. Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Rielly, Rush Limbaugh, Bill Maher, Joe Scarborough and so on are not news people they are editorial commentators making a living doing shtick not delivering news.
Get informed, get real, make decision with real time, real world, modern world realities and truths not interpretive writings and stories. There was a time in this Country that people used the bible to kill people for being witches, enslaving other humans, banned interracial marriage, restricted voting and so on. The Bible is over used as a tool of division. It is time it was used to bring the broader population together.
For the record I am not gay. I am married, one time to the same woman for 21 years. We don't need nor did we need the Catholic Church to accomplish this. Truth, honesty, common sense, and love of each other have enabled us to accomplish this lifelong partnership.

Let's get serious and practical. Do we want the gay marriage influence in our state considering . . .
1. The very high rate of disease caused by the lifestyle . . . AIDS, STDs, ANAL cancer, mental illness, Hepatitis A, B, & C, etc. One study concludes that 56% of AIDS is found in 2% of the population,
2. The very high rate of promiscuity - I mean numerous partners! Monogamy is very RARE. One example: Prior to the AIDS epidemic, a 1978 study found that 75 percent of white, gay males claimed to have had more than 100 lifetime male sex partners: 15 percent claimed 100-249 sex partners; 17 percent claimed 250-499; 15 percent claimed 500- 999; and 28 percent claimed more than 1,000 lifetime male sex partners. Levels of promiscuity subsequently declined, but some observers are concerned that promiscuity is again approaching the levels of the 1970s now that the HIV research has made gains in treatment.
3. Children will be influenced to go GAY. Aren't our children confused enough!?
4. No proof of being "Born that Way" after millions of dollars of research - NO PROOF! For example, studies show that 75-90 percent of women who have sex with women have also had sex with men.
5. Only 3% of the population choose to live a gay lifestyle.
6. The promiscuity and health problems lead to exorbitant costs for the taxpayer.
7. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF) cut in half its coverage of health insurance premiums for domestic partners of its employees, calling the premiums "prohibitively expensive" while demanding other corporations offer this coverage.
8. In Vermont, only 1/3 of gay marriages/civil unions are between men and men.
Please research and make an informed decision about the influence of the National Gay Lobby and how it will really affect Maine's society. We do not TOLERATE other dangerous lifestyle habits!

EITHER WAY IN MY BOOK-THESE RISKS AND CHANCES HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO AFFECT EVERYONE GAY-STRAIGHT-ASEXUAL... DISEASE IS NOT BIASED, IT DOES PREFER OVER THE OTHER... IT HAPPENS. NOT TOLERATING DANGEROUS LIFESTYLE HABITS FROM GAYS? BUT WHAT ABOUT STRAIGHTS? GAY OR STRAIGHT-SOME PEOPLE LIFE RISKY LIFESTYLES DUE TO THE BLEEPED UP CHILDHOOD THEY HAD, TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCES THAT THEY'VE HAD TO ENDURE, OR GENETICS. WHERE IS THE COMPASSION AND LOVE FOR THE 'CHILD' THAT NEEDED GOOD PEOPLE IN THEIR LIVES, OR LOVING PEOPLE, OR NOT MENTALLY ILL? LOL! CAN'T HELP THAT HONEY!
IT IS UP TO US AS CARING, LOVING PEOPLE AND PARENTS TO INSTILL GOOD VALUES AMONGST OUR CHILDREN TO PROTECT THEMSELVES WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO SEX, LIFE, FINANCES, DRUGS-THERE IS NO PLACING BLAME ON SOMEONES SEXUALITY. ALL TOO OFTEN-KIDS ARE NOT GIVING THE RIGHT INFORMATION BY THEIR PARENTS ABOUT SEX AND DISEASES. ITS A GREAT TOPIC TO TALK ABOUT. THERE SHOULD BE NO REASON FOR A CHILD TO NOT GET INFORMED ABOUT SEX BY THEIR PARENTS. ABSTINENCE IS THE KEY. ITS IMPORTANT AS A PARENT TO BE FULLY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND DISCUSS THESE ISSUES TO PREVENT THEM FROM GETTING STDS, PREVENT THEM FROM NOT USING DRUGS, OR EVEN TEACHING THEM NOT TO HATE-NO MATTER HOW MUCH A PARENT DOES NOT WANT TO. ITS NOT OKAYING THE BEHAVIOR-BUT RATHER SHOWING THAT 'I AM A CARING PARENT AND THAT THEY GET THE INFORMATION FROM ME TO PROTECT THEMSELVES.'
CHILDREN ARE BORN GAY, THEY'RE NOT INFLUENCED. WHEN YOU CAN LOOK AT A TODDLER AND THINK SOMETHING IS OFF BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO PLAY WITH WHAT BOYS PLAY WITH OR GIRLS-WHAT GIRLS PLAY WITH-AND YOU KNOW THEN! THEY ARE NOT INFLUENCED.
AS FAR AS MENTAL ILLNESS-THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING MENTALLY ILL. IT EFFECTS AMERICANS AND PEOPLE ALL AROUND THE WORLD. MENTAL ILLNESS ISN'T BIASED. IT DOESN'T SAY ITS GOING TO GO FOR THIS PERSON MORE THAN THE OTHER. ITS A SERIOUS ISSUE THAT PEOPLE LIKE TO MAKE LIGHT OF. I FEAR THAT THIS ALONE-AND HAVING A CHILD OR PERSON QUESTION WHO THEY ARE AND THEIR SEXUALITY OR A CHILD WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS THAT IS NOT GAY BUT HAS A MENTAL ILLNESS-WITH THIS BELIEF MAY BE POTENTIALLY HARMFUL TO THEIR OWN WELL-BEING IN FEAR OF NOT GETTING THE HELP THEY NEED OR NOT BEING ABLE TO GO TO THEIR PARENT FOR HELP. ITS RUMORS LIKE THESE THAT CAN HAVE DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES.
I ASK AGAIN-WHERE IS THE COMPASSION? UNDERSTANDING? THE PARENTING SKILLS?

JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE EVEN SAYS GAY OR KNOWS SOMEONE WHO IS GAY-DOESN'T MEAN YOU'RE GOING TO TURN GAY OR YOUR CHILDREN OR WHAT HAVE YOU. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING GAY, BLACK, MUSLIM-WHATEVER IT MAY BE THAT A PERSON IS THAT PEOPLE FEAR. AND BTW THE TERM 'HOMO' IS MEANT IN A RUDE WAY. WE'RE NOT STUPID!
I HOPE THAT SOMEDAY MOST WILL REALIZE THAT THEY ARE CONTINUING HATE, PREJUDICE, DISCRIMINATION TO EFFECT OUR FUTURE AND OUR CHILDREN JUST BY THE WORDS WE CHOOSE TO SAY. WE ALREADY LIVE IN A CRUEL, HATEFUL WORLD? WHY, WHY DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE THIS METHOD OF MADNESS WHEN ITS ONLY GOING TO HARM THE FUTURE. PEOPLE WANT PEACE IN THE WORLD? BUT THEN THEY SAY HATEFUL, IGNORANT STUFF LIKE THIS?
WHERE IS THE COMPASSION? EMPATHY? RESPECT?
NO ONE CAN CONVINCE ANYONE TO VOTE FOR SAME-SEX MARRIAGE... YOU'RE GONNA VOTE HOW YOU'RE GONNA VOTE. THE BIGGER PICTURE-THE ISSUE IS HOW RUTHLESS, DISRESPECTFUL, HATEFUL, AND IGNORANT PEOPLE EXPRESS THEMSELVES ON SJ OR ANYWHERE?
I AM HONESTLY ASHAMED TO BE A HUMAN BEING, AN AMERICAN, A MAINER! THIS IS IS DISGUSTING-THE WORDS PEOPLE CHOOSE! JUST DISGUSTING!

Regardless of whether or not gay marriage is taught in schools, the children of gays and lesbians attend school and deserve for their parents and families to be treated with the same amount of respect and dignity and recognition as the children of straight parents. Kids talk about their parents and families. If my daughter talks about her two moms, she's not teaching anyone about gay marriage, she's talking about her family and her parents. That discussion between friends at school is more powerful in creating social change than any curriculum.

Shouldn't we just focus on treating all children with respect, dignity and recognition rather than focusing on just one group or another? I'm not sure you meant it this way, and feel free to clarify if I've taken a wrong read, but what does recognition have to do with anything? I don't see how recognition should be given just because of a family situation. To me recognition is deserved when someone does something that exceeds the norm or over comes something that would lead most others to fail. Again, I may be taking a wrong read on it so please correct me if I have.
I agree with you that if your daughter talks about her two moms with her friends at school that's fine and leads to a far stronger and more lasting social change than any curriculum can. No child should ever be made to feel that they cannot talk openly about the people they love or their situation at home.
A bit off topic but part of the problem with public schools is the manufacturing approach. There is no one size fits all solution to educating children or adults. The failure of the system to recognize that is a grave injustice to society.

26For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
28And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Let me tell you what – I am the first to admit that my children are wrong – if they are wrong – That is just another MORAL I have instilled in them – "Own up to your mistakes" – To be honest with you – maybe I am a "paranoid parent" but, because of that, I do talk to my children and they are very much educated on the issues at hand – They, like their parents, grandparents, grandparents parents and so on and so forth, chose to believe in God's word and all of the teachings therein. We don’t need you people trying to convert them to your way of thinking, no more than you would want your children converted to our way (what a horrible thing that would be for you).
EXTRA DOLLARS brought into the economy is your reasoning for which we should all stand behind you? Give me a break. Does money make everything okay? If a serial killer came and started killing and others followed and it generated huge revenues for the news papers which in turn gave back to the economy, would the money make it alright that we had people killing people? No. There is no logic to it.
Leave it out of the schools. What you do behind closed doors is your business. Don’t try to make it mine or my families. My faith and that of my children and loved ones is certainly worth more than a limo service, tuxes or booze.
Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah and fire from the Lord out of heaven. Genesis 19:24

"You people"??? LOL! Random, I'm married to a man, and I'm a woman. This isn't about you people. This IS about hypocrites shoving their religion down everyone's throats and expecting us not to choke. If you want to continue to thump your bible, try reading it. The only place it says anything about man lying with man is in Leviticus, if we must abide by that then you must abide by the rest of what it says:
Leviticus chapters 1 - 10
are directions on gutting, slaughtering, and sacrificing animals at the door of the church, and then putting the blood on and around the alter. Then you must burn the animal, all for your simple sins.
Leviticus chapter 18
has 1 line after 15 commands to not uncover nakedness from your mother all the way to your neighbors wife,"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination."
Leviticus 19
has a few that everyone breaks:
16Thou shalt not go up and down [as] a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I [am] the LORD.
19Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.
27Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.
Leviticus 20
9For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood [shall be] upon him. (time to put your teenagers to death)
Leviticus 25
3 Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof;
4 But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.
5 That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: [for] it is a year of rest unto the land.
(farmers cannot do anything every 7 years!)
29 And if a man sell a dwelling house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; [within] a full year may he redeem it. (so if you buy a house, and within a year the old owners want it back you HAVE to sell it back to them)
Let me know when your going to start slaughtering animals at your church door, I'll bring the red dogs.
"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants. It is the creed of slaves." William Pitt

It is bad enough that you push you lifestyle on us and cry and whine about how abused you are - but to go into a classroom where we are forced to send our children by law and teach them things that are completely against their parents teachings and morals is completely and utterly despicable. If you want to live that way – that is between you and God, but you had better not attempt to teach my children or future grandchildren that what I have taught them about the sanctity of marriage between a MAN and WOMAN is wrong and that your lifestyle is right or I, like many others, will fight you tooth and nail and we will win, as there are many of us who just observe, but don’t try to mess with our children's minds or we will come out of the woodwork faster than you can blow your nose and your so-called teachings will be banned and your miserable existence will be made even more miserable when you find out how many people truly are against you and are willing to fight to save their children from your appalling tactics.

There is also a "possibility" that an extinction-level event could happen (i.e. asteroid or massive nuclear exchange) could happen on any given day. But I'm not going to whine and cry about that, either, even though the outcome is, well, a little more scary than two ladies getting hitched.
If you don't like equal marriage, stay Catholic and send your kids to Catholic schools - it's worked for years. The rest of us would like to live in modern times, thank you very much.

It is time to get your head out of the sand and realize that not everyone lives the same or has the same beliefs and being different does not equal being bad. Beinginb bivotted and narrowminded is bad

I remember before the ads aginst gay rights saying that if the law passes the gays will fight for marriage next and gay parades and you will have to pay for thier sex changes, and etc. and the Gay rights activists shouting this is all hogwash and lies they only want the right to live freely without being discriminated for housing and jobs and such, Now here we are folks so if you think it will not be taught then think again it will be. They wish to say being Gay is natural and should be welcomed and and therefore should be taught so as to instill in our children that if you have feelings for another of the same sex then it is alright to act on those feelings as it would be encouraged to do so. These Slimy politicians are our worse enemies someday the people will wake up and realize it!

Obviously a change in the legal definition of "marriage" will affect what children are told in schools and elsewhere. The kids will now be told that certain homosexual couples are "married," whereas before they were not told that. The subject will inevitably come up--it doesn't have to be in the formal curriculum for that to happen. I am astonished at the denial on this subject--does anyone really think that children are unconscious of what everybody else is talking about?
