N. Willard: Support love, not hate

We have heard it before and here it is again: Paul Madore insists that because gays are asking for equal rights they are requesting “special treatment.”

If others already have the right to marry, how can it be considered “special” to request that same right?

It is no different than asking for equal pay for equal work. It is a request for the same freedom that others enjoy.

Franklin D. Roosevelt described the four freedoms which were painted by Norman Rockwell. They are freedom of speech, of religion and freedom from want and from fear.

Too often in our “Democracy” those who are “gay” have suffered horrible abuse — even death and suicide — because of the hate and prejudice inflicted on them.

Roy L. Smith wrote that “The ideal marriage is not one in which two people marry to be happy, but to make each other happy.”

Those of us who support equal rights believe that pursuit of happiness should be an equal right.

The people asking for “special treatment” are Madore and conservative Christians. Despite our guaranteed freedom of religion, they insist that everyone accept their rules.

There are other religions and their rules are different. “All are worthy, all are welcome,” for example.

Those campaigning against equal rights are not being asked to participate in any way, shape or form in gay marriages.

It would be a welcome change if they would live and let live, and support love, not hate.

Love not hate

Jonathan;
There is not one good enough reason why such a Law should ever pass. Why are you so interested in this Law.? What's in it for you?

Is it so important to you that two men or two Women be allowed to be legally allowed to become Husband and Wife.

You must have a Vested interest here or an Agenda. I do have somewhat of an idea of where you are coming from Politically.

Based upon the different positions that you have wrapped yourself around I'm not really surprised about how you arrived at where you are .

Do your Parents if they are still with Us and I hope that they are? Do they embrace your Ideals on Same Sex marriage? What also Puzzels me is your lack of Understanding when i write about Social Re-egineering. Certainly you cannot be that Blind or Niave or can you?

I also neglected to set something else straight from my Point of View.

I' m OK with Paul Madore. Paul is dedicated to something that he strongly Believes in and I make no effort to disguise my overall Endorsement of what exactly he advocates for.

He is not as Tony wrote a Cranky Old Dude' To the contrary he like myself and others have grown Tired of the attempted effort of Socially reengineering the Moral Standards of America.

But I am pretty convinced that the trend is moving away from such Lunacy as two Men and Two Women being Married. as well as recieving Social Security Death benifets.

There is a significant gradual shift in the voting trend of America and it will Culminate with the defeat of Barack O'bama and America finally will come to it's Senses.

Morality really means much moore than two Social Misfits tying the Know. Just how much we can bend the law to suit some Wacky emotionaly driven attempt to Highjack common Sense

A better explanation of why Marriage Equality must pass

has not been made.
"reengineering the Moral Stantards of America"? I've seen and read the Constitution, Bill of Rights, but I'm unaware of having ever voted on the adoption of any "moral standards".

Hate not what ever

I am really growing tired of these types of Letters from Nancy Willard.
It seems to me and some others that we do not have any interest what so ever in her choice of her Constitutency and who they want to Marry.

When I think of the Premise it is so Laughable and Funny that I cannot help but snicker at their simple expressions of so-called love.

But what is important here is that Americans who happen to disagree with Ms Willard have reached the Tolerance level.Plese lets discuss something else that would require some in Depth thinking about issues tht reall impact our Society. Instead of Wallowing in this Absurd Devotion to Diversity,

Everytime Ms Willard submits one, of her Missives she becomes one more of the requsite ammount Useful idiot's for a cause driven to support and Congradulate the Social Misfits of our Society that in normal times hardly anyone would ever notice.

The Gay friends that My Sweetheart and I have as friends would never parade around in Public and make a Public Spectacle of themselves lijke the Nancy Willards of the World seem to need to be.

The Church

I view the church as any large criminally founded institution and though I am a Baptist the SBC is just the same as the old Italian and Irish sentiments. Through tyranny and criminality the Churches have expanded and the expansive growth is not one of Christ. Rather, it is becoming a tired old beast meant for the free economic markets and through honest graft as the lectures at Tammany had taught us. What, level is it then if honest graft to complain about it? Other, then receiving tax-write off's the Churches should lose their tax exempt statuses for those reasons alone. I support gay marriages at the town halls and civil ceremonies but the Churches are free to not have it rammed down through throats. It is a Conservative and Liberal tactic to ram everything down a bases throat; as for the Conservative ideals of the churches lately the same old burn and hell gets old. It gets toasty in hell if the Conservative read the old Testament laws regarding hypocrites who judged others, they were judged, stoned, and buried just the same; did they read that part as I've read it?

I'm still confused...

... I believe the 1st ammendment protects Catholic institutions from being forced to provide birth control and abortion but I also believe that the same law allows the Unitarian Universalists to marry same sex couples. Look, many people that are religious forget the circumstances under which many of their predecessors came to this country. The United States was founded as a country with out an endorsed religion not to exclude religion but as a purposeful attempt at the inclusion of all religions. One may not agree with the gay lifestyle ,and so be it, but that is irrelevant to this argument. The argument is whether it is anyone's place outside the walls of any church to dictate what beliefs are valid within those walls. If a church recognizes the marriage between two men or two women thats all I need. In my opinion, the argument is not based on gay rights but upon the first ammendment and the freedom of religions to practice their faith as they see fit.

31 states have elected not to

31 states have elected not to allow same sex marriage within the confines of their respective borders; 6 have voted to allow same sex marriage, leaving 13 states, including Maine, who have yet to deal with the issue. If 7 of the 13 states join the 6 states in favor of it, that leaves 37 states who will have voted it down. Maine will be choosing to pass a law that 74% of the people in our country oppose. Can they all be wrong? Just a thought.

tide has turned

Actually, Madore's a pretty good guy; just has a more than common opinion on homosexuality in general and same sex marriage in particular. He isn't unique nor alone in that regard.

Tony Morin's picture

Sorry Pirate

I disagree. Speaking out against gay marriage is one thing. He takes it a step further and speaks out against gays and lesbians and homosexuality in general. 4-10% of the population is gay or lesbian. People in our families, at work, and in our circle of friends. People in his life are gay, likely including some of the religious clergy in his life over the years. I went to Catholic school from kindergarten through graduate school. The percentage of gays in religious life is more than the average in society. Maybe even some of the people on your ship Pirate. Look at Jack Sparrow! I feel bad for these people in his life. That's the part that is sad to me.
