Why target just Mainecare recipients? I'd go a step further - deny health benefits to all smokers with a taxpayer funded health plan. That would include everyone covered by Maine State Employee Health Insurance plans.
The posters who have been endlessly and bitterly railing against this change are a lot of the reason I will not be getting verified and making my personal information public. Seriously, if you don't like the policy change, instead of spending hours posting about how you are going to leave why not just GO AWAY ALREADY. You are sounding more demented all the time.
When I registered here, the name I wanted was taken, I had to have something different and unique in order to post. My real name is very common, what if someone with the same name as mine starts posting comments that people find outrageous or offensive? What is my recourse to avoid fallout from the reading public who think the poster is me; how do I protect my own name?
This is just a bad idea all around.
Good for you that you feel safe and comfortable. If your name was Roxanne, you were single and lived alone (or with your little ones) you might have a different take on it.
I still have not heard how your paper intends to make the verification process foolproof. If I register under the name Parrot O. Pirate, give a phone number for verification and say "Yep, my name is Parrot O. Pirate" when I get a call from the SJ who is going to call me a liar? How about phones shared by more than one commenter in a household? How is requiring a phone call going to prove someone is who they say they are?
Norman Rockwell, reallllly???? I have news for Rex, the world of Norman Rockwell is long gone. In its place is the world of stalkers, anonymous phone calls in the middle of the night, slashed tires, and people with little moral compass but with a strong sense of self serving entitlement and outrage at anyone who dares to criticize their actions.
I predict your comments section will dwindle down to nothing.
BTW, how exactly do you plan to "verify" that someone is who they say they are? A phone call? In the age of unlisted cell phones, what will be proved about the person answering? Anyone can claim they are whatever name they choose, and when they get a call from the SJ on the number they listed they can say, "Oh sure, Sun Journal, yep, I'm so and so."
Facebook says this change does not affect users' pre-existing privacy settings. If your privacy settings are such that only people who are friends can see your in-depth info (such as where you live and work), that will not change.
Ben (and anyone), has it ever occurred to you that perhaps people here LIE about themselves? Unless you personally know someone here, don't be so quick to take their word about ANYTHING. Step back, take a breath, and think about that. Signed, a 24 year old blonde bombshell virgin who has a rock star boyfriend.

And how about same names, different people

How heartwarming and inspiring! Mr. Dearborn is a true American patriot. He served his country in active duty, and continues to serve in retirement.
