Drive Thru restaurant

Well, after all, it is a drive thru isn't it?

Lewiston Drum Group

This was a very interesting article and articulately written. I never knew that this sort of group in Lewiston-Auburn even existed, let alone Maine. Reading it reminded me of my stay in the orient where I witnessed Buddhists using drums similarly to communicate with their gods.

Another restaurant?

Well...yes it is "new" to us in the sense that we've never had a restaurant in the L/A area that is a mix of Arab, Greek and Western cuisine...and replete with belly dancers no less! However, I'm not a big fan of more restaurants in the area, regardless of the cuisine. We have far too many restaurants in the L/A area. We need to move to a production-oriented society again, as in the days of Industrialization. That's more important to a community in this dire economic state that's struggling with finding and keeping jobs than a restaurant that might perhaps hire 6-12 people for their staff. L/A needs to create jobs that hire huge clusters of people, perhaps 300 to 600, or more, and bring in the companies that actually manufacture things. It sounds insensitive to not welcome this "new" restaurant into the community, but I'd really rather see a job come in that uses more of a sizable work force, actually makes something, and ships it out of state or out of country for profit. That's my take on it and I'm sticking to it.

Purse snatcher

What a despicable thing to do, especially during Christmas! The camera image is not the best but in my opinion is still clear enough to identify this perpetrator. Somebody in the community (an area encompassing roughly only 70,000 people) must surely know this person. They're just not coming forward to identify him.

Poland Five Corners

I would like to see a roundabout installed at Five Corners. Roundabouts have been proven to slow down traffic, move traffic more smoothly, and save lives. There should also be speed signs, slowing traffic down perhaps a mile before the casino site on both northbound and southbound lanes. As it stands now Five Corners is an accident waiting to happen.

Green Christmas

I spent three years of celebrating Christmas in Guam, and those of you are geographically literate know that it never snows in Guam. I enjoyed Christmas nonetheless. It won't be a big deal for me if it doesn't snow for Christmas in Maine. I still feel the spirit and celebrate its true meaning: the birth of Christ!

Congratulations on Head Start pick!

Congratulations Betsy! While a member of United Way of Androscoggin County's panel on Building Self-sufficiency and Independence, I had the pleasure of visiting Advocates For Children numerous times. I witnessed the great work that Betsy was doing in the community to ensure quality education for our children and support to families in Androscoggin County. I'm sure with her background and years of experience in the various aspects of children's advocacy that she is the perfect fit for her new position of Director of Head Start. Good for you Betsy! Keep up the great work.

The Future of Bates Mill No. 5

How about an indoor health and physical fitness facility? By the looks of it many people walking the streets of L-A (including myself) sure could use the facility. An indoor track would be nice to walk, bike, or jog in inclement weather. With the size of the building it could even incorporate a bike track. The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that in 2003-2004, 17.1% of US children and adolescents were overweight, with the rates continuing to increase. These children are at an increased risk for developing health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and hypertension. Activity levels for many children have declined because of a built environment that is unsafe for walking and bicycling, the low percentage of children who take physical education in school, and the popularity of sedentary leisure-time activities. This would be an excellent way for L-A to actually underline the word "Dirigo" (I lead) by being the first urban area in Maine to have such a facility.

100 mile limit between casinos

I am neither against or for a Lewiston casino. However, I would like to know how and when the minimum of 100 miles driving distance between casinos got lifted? Not too long ago, Oxford casino was being challenged for a violation of distance between Oxford and the Hollywood slots in Bangor. According to Google maps,Lewiston is about 86 miles from Bangor and approximately 15 miles from Oxford. Thus, unless I'm not understanding it correctly, building a casino in Lewiston would clearly violate the less than 100 miles rule between Bangor or Oxford.

Congratulations on your retirement

I too was one of Lee Hearn's students. No, not in the public school system. Lee and Bob,(her husband), have both been an inspiration in my life. Through their supervision and "parental" guidance as Superintendents at Opportunity Farm for Boys in New Gloucester, the Hearns helped mold me into what I am today: a successful person. As a young boy living at the "farm" in the 60's, I was taught all the values in life that would become instrumental in shaping my future and contributing to my success in this world. And this could not have happened without the guidance of the Hearns. Thus, I am not surprised to read about Lee's endearing qualities as a teacher at Sherwood Heights that she leaves behind as she embarks (reluctantly) on her life of retirement. Enjoy every minute of it Lee; you have been an inspiration in my life!
