Leaches? News flash- teachers in Maine do not earn 70 grand- most earn half that. If you were paying attention, students would be in school for the same number of hours, but over four days instead of five. Themselfs? - must have been the teacher's fault that you have difficulties with grammar and spelling.
I've been teaching high school in LA for the past twenty years and know many (too many actually) teens who have been saved by New Beginnings. These are angry, hurting teens who have nothing- for most, their families have abandoned them or could care less about them - they are trying to get away from a bad situation (it's scary what some of these young people have to live with). For the first time in their lives, there is structure, there is no violence, they hear positive messages about education and people are concerned about where they are. I could go on and on with praises for the staff at New Beginnings- you guys are awesome for what you do.
Channel 6 reported YESTERDAY at NOON the guy's name and that he was in his apartment filling a chainsaw with gasoline, spilled some on his shirt, then later ignited himself. Still leaves a lot of questions-
actually, FIXIT, the premium is just over $1500 per month for an entire family through Anthem. That's $18,000 per year. The school department will pay 70% of that, or $12,600 per year. Add that to starting $30,000 and it's a total of $42,600 per year for someone with a college degree to work 187 7.5 hour days (comes to just over $30 an hour combined salary and benefits, or $21 an hour just salary). Health insurance is the only benefit. No dental is included. There are blue collar, non-college educated workers starting at not much less than that. It's wonderful of the SJ to keep stating "the taxpayer pays". Of course the taxpayer pays (as an alternative, how about getting rid of public education- it's too socialist- private education for everyone! Wouldn't we just love those tuition bills? ).
Yesterday, one of my friends gave Stevens a business card for a work support program and explained that the organization could help him to find employment (he had good intentions, wasnt trying to be a jerk to him). Stevens responded "I don't want to work". Sorry folks, my heart doesn't bleed for him, especially since BK has a sign 100 ft away that says accepting applications.
Wilson- I'm sure that these teachers paid attention to their hiring package- the city is trying to change that package , which is the issue. Way back when you were a kid, other taxpayers paid for YOUR education (assuming you went to a public school). And if you had children, other taxpayers helped to pay for their education. If taxes to pay for schools were only assessed on people who had children in the system, their taxes would skyrocket. While we're at it, let's only tax people who want police and fire protection and garbage collection. The truth to these negotiations- the city expected teachers to work an unlimited number of hours and take a pay cut in the process. Teachers in Auburn have, in the past, agreed to a lower salary in exchange for a better insurance package. Further, teachers in Auburn make a great deal less than their counterparts in Lewiston and in many other Maine cities! What is there to be disgusted about?
finally- intelligent discussions about health care. We want a plan that does not take away already good existing coverage that we choose, that does not increase taxes, and that does not increase the national debt. These are the real issues, not death panels and socialism.
what?????
