First, Jayla has hit the nail right on the head. I easily found the transfer credit information by searching within the schools mini-google box. My experience with SMCC to USM was quite easy once I decided to take responsibility for myself.
The Community College System Schools (CCSS) and the University of Maine System Schools (UMSS) work in conjunction to ensure the most efficient and valuable transfer of credit from CCSS to UMSS. The problem often comes when assumptions are made that all SSCC credits will work toward a UMSS major or core curriculum. It should be the prime responsibility of the student who is spending the money and time, and planning a transfer, to see how certain courses will apply to UMSS programs. As for those courses that don't transfer toward core curriculum or major requirements, most majors require general elective credit to round out the 120 credits needed for a Bachelor's Degree. The exception is probably the Engineering program, but if the CCSS student has done his homework, he can work on the Engineering core curriculum requirements before transferring. My suggest is to self-advocate - bug the heck out of your CCSS advisor then do the same with a UMSS advisor to figure out what is most valuable for transfer.
Another benefit for SMCC students is being able to take up to five courses not offered at SMCC, at other local colleges, through the Greater Portland Alliance of Colleges and Universities (GPACU). This is an opportunity for the SMCC student to take up to five courses at UNE, St. Joseph's College, USM, or MECCA, all at SMCC course cost, and it factors into the SMCC student's financial aid! This is both cost and quality at a bargain.
