Being a teacher here in Maine, with cold and flu season in full swing and widespread H1N1, I am concerned about absentee rates of the students. But what concerns me more is the number of students who are not kept home when they are ill and contagious.
I understand that families often can't afford to have a parent stay home to care for their sick children. Many families, especially now during hard economic times, have to budget their money very carefully, and they can't afford the luxury of recovery time for their own illnesses, much less to stay home to care for a sick child.
What's worse is that there are some workers who don't have paid sick days who risk losing their jobs if they take time off to take care of themselves. For these individuals and their families it's simply not an option to take the kinds of actions and precautions that would reduce the spread of sickness in the classroom.
I regularly see children who come to school sick who can't be home because their parents are working. It makes me sad and worried, and my heart goes out to these families.
The Maine Legislature should pass LD 1665 to prevent the hardship currently caused by Mainers' inability to maintain their livelihoods, care for loved ones and reduce the spread of illness. I believe a minimum standard of paid sick days will protect kids and help keep us all safe and healthy.

verified Maybe her union could pay for paid sick leave for every parent who works at a gas station or corner store, and kick in some money for the employee who will be paid to cover the shift. Paid sick leave costs the employer twice for the same job: once for the sick, once for the cover.
That's so republican of you Tron.
I love the way you guys roll in the gutter and attack people all the time. Speak to the topic, for a change, instead of hurling insults.
Tron, you crack me up. Speaking of name calling, from this weekend "IF these republican baboons had any pride" and "right wing wackos". I guess baboons and wackos is not name calling.
They are identifiers, not name calling. I wish to make certain you know whom I'm talking about, and apparently you did.
And the identifier of "republican" was applied to you like you applied "baboon" and "right wing wackos" to others.
Tron, when I read your post, a simialr thought ran through my mine.
well aren't you clever, ray, attempting to turn my words around to make it seem like I do the same thing you do. Well first, you have no bone in this discussion, the initial comment and reply was from and to someone else. You decided to join in just to attack. And republican was not used as an identifier, but as a insult, slur, demeaning comment, totally inappropriate to the topic. go back into your little hole and return when you're able to maintain decency in society. In other words, good bye forever, not that I could ever hope for that to happen.
Actually Tron, calling you a republican wasn't an insult it was a complement. Your comment about mom and pops versus wal mart allowing paid sick was correct and for once you sounded like a republican. Smart, logical, and business oriented.
Dan, believe me when I say, these posts will come back to haunt you. I almost posted the same thing yesterday
Sorry, I don't see being called a Republican an insult.
This is an open forum and I just call them as I see them and I will continue to participate whether you like it or not.
I really sympathize with you, Marianne, but PAID sick leave may just not be affordable for smaller companies. Mandating unpaid sick leave, while not an ideal situation for most, is really the only thing you should reasonably expect to put on small employers. Now large corporations like Walmart should be held to a better standard, but the local Mom and Pop not so much.
Tron I agree well said
