Council adopts agenda change

AUBURN – Councilors made changes to their regular meeting agendas permanent Tuesday night.

They voted unanimously to shuffle their agendas, putting a public comment period at the end of their meetings. Previously, citizens had their open comment period first, before councilors moved on to the rest of the agenda.

Mayor John Jenkins said the change shouldn’t keep people from bringing problems or concerns to the City Council.

“The open session will still occur, but we get our city business finished a little more expeditiously,” he said.

A series of ward meetings, which began earlier this month, are giving people even more opportunity to check in with councilors.

“I think the ward meetings may be better a format for getting public comment, anyway,” Jenkins said. “We can direct our full attention to their comments or their questions. There are not other items on the agenda competing with what they want to say.”

The ward meeting series continues Monday night at The Great Falls Performing Arts Center. Jenkins and city councilors are hosting the meeting specifically for Ward 4 residents.

“The best thing about this council now is their flexibility,” he said. “Basically, our agendas are not written in stone. If it doesn’t work to put the open session at the end, we can change it back.”
