Crews removing tanks under old Xtra Mart

AUBURN – Demolition crews should finish pulling out the old gasoline tanks this week under the former Xtra Mart at the corner of Court and Spring streets.

Paul Chabot of Chabot Construction in Greene, said his crews are leaving the building alone.

“But the tanks need to come out,” he said. “That’s all we’re worried about.”

They began work Monday, tearing down the canopies covering the gasoline pumps at the old service station-variety store. Chabot said work should wrap up by Friday.

The building is in the process of being sold, according to Charles DiFazio, corporate counsel for owners K Bros. LLC out of Southington, Conn.

“There may be more construction there in the future, but I can’t say anything about that,” DiFazio said.
