FARMINGTON — Daniel Stearns Hylan, 74, of Farmington died Sunday, Aug. 16, at home with his family.

He was born Aug. 31, 1940, in Strong, the son of Henry William Hylan and Phyllis Kennedy Hylan. Dan grew up in Farmington, except during the World War II years, when his dad worked in the shipyards in Portland and the family lived at Prouts Neck. He graduated from Farmington High School in 1958 and received his Bachelor of Science in education at Farmington State Teachers College in 1962, as well as his Masters in Education in 1967 and his Certificate of Advanced Study in 1969 from the University of Maine.

He married his high school sweetheart, devoted companion and caregiver, Marilyn Marie Morton, on June 22, 1963. Dan taught at Brewer Junior High School, Brewer High School and Husson College. He later taught at Dirigo High School in Dixfield and eventually moved back to Farmington.

Dan spent 29 years teaching in the classroom before devoting much of his time to his second career, buying and selling antiques for his business, Over Fifty Antiques. He enjoyed meeting and working with the many people he met as he traveled for his business, stopping only when illness prevented him from working.

He loved the many summers he spent with his family, friends and neighbors at Pemaquid. There, he painted, worked as a sternman on a lobster boat, clerked in the Village Market, cooked at the Captain’s Catch and appreciated the beauty of the ocean. He also had a great appreciation for wildlife and nature, as well as the many family dogs and cats that were part of the family over the years.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marilyn; one daughter, Marion Hylan Barr and her husband, John A. Barr, of Hallowell and their daughter, Clio Marie Barr; one son, Daniel F. Hylan and his girlfriend, Erinn Sullivan Michaud, of Skowhegan and her daughters, Olivia and Emily Michaud; a sister-in-law, Patricia Morton Larson and her husband, Ed, of Wayne; a brother-in-law, Richard M. Morton and his wife, Joyce, of Farmington; cousin, Peter Kennedy and his wife, Marita, of East Orleans, Mass.; nieces, Rebecca Larson and her husband, Peter Lord, of Washington, D.C., and Christina Larson Belknap and her husband, Sam, of Milford; nephews, John Morton and his wife, Kate Morton, of Arlington, Mass., and Miles Morton and his wife, Maria, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and three grandnephews.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude and thanks to Priscilla, Peg, Heather, Cheryl, Tina and Susan for the loving care and friendship they provided to the family as they helped Marilyn care for Dan the last years of his life.
