David R. Higgins Jr.


PORTLAND – David Higgins Jr., of Cumberland and Port Charlotte, Fla., died May 29, Memorial Day, at Maine Medical Center. His wife of 50 years was by his side.

He was born on Aug. 16, 1928, son of David Higgins and Genevieve Wellehan Higgins of Auburn. He was a graduate of Edward Little High School, Maine Central Institute and Bates College, where he earned a degree in economics.

Dave was a family-oriented man. He was a little league coach and was active in the Boy Scouts. He was also a civic-minded individual who served as a school director for SAD 51 for four years. He was a past director of the Cumberland Water District, a selectman and councilman for the town of Cumberland. He was the original director of Val Halla Golf Course in Cumberland. He was also a past president of the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association. He was president of the Board of Trustees at MCI and a former president of the Greater Portland Council of Governments. He served on the Dealer Forum for Remington Rand.

One of his passions was golf. He was a member of Kingsway Country Club in Lake Suzy, Fla., as well as Val Halla Golf Course in Cumberland. He enjoyed playing for the Maine Seniors Golf Association.

He was extremely athletic. He was not only a good golfer, but also a Golden Gloves boxer who had an opportunity to go pro. He played football and basketball in college. He very much enjoyed cheering for his children and grandchildren at sporting events.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Higgins; his son, David and his wife, Linda, of Cumberland; his daughter, Lisa Siegal and her husband, Byron, of New Hampshire; his son, Peter, of Cumberland; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; his siblings, Bill and his wife, Joyce, of Auburn, Gene and his wife, Claudie, of Yarmouth; and his sister, Dorothy of Lewiston.
