Death of toddler ruled an accident

NEW YORK (AP) – A toddler’s death during a hide-and-seek game was an accident, medical examiners said.

As the medical examiners made their ruling Friday, residents crafted a memorial out of candles and a baby-formula can in the lobby of the Bronx building where 2-year-old Anthony Pena died.

“I feel awful,” said building manager Suzanne McBain. “It’s so tragic.”

Anthony was found dead in a plastic storage container in his family’s apartment Thursday morning. His mother told police that the toddler and his siblings, ages 4 and 6, sneaked out of bed overnight to play hide-and-seek.

She said one of the older children apparently put Anthony in the container and went back to sleep without letting him out.

The mother awoke Thursday to find Anthony’s body inside the container. Medical examiners determined that he had suffocated.
