GRAY — Maine State Police say a man who shot and killed his autistic son at their Gray home may have been worried about who would care for his son after he and his wife died.

Police identified the victims as 44-year-old Daniel McLatchie and his 22-year-old son, Benjamin McLatchie.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office on Wednesday declared the deaths a murder-suicide, according to Maine Public Safety Spokesman Stephen McCausland.

State police detectives said Daniel McLatchie shot his son in the head and then turned the gun on himself. The weapon was found nearby, police said.

Both bodies were discovered by Cumberland County deputies at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday on or near the driveway to the house, McCausland said. Deputies had responded when a male caller asked police to come to the house.

Police believe the call was made by the father. Two notes from McLatchie were found inside his house, McCausland said.

Maine State Police Sgt. Chris Harriman told the Portland Press Herald that Daniel McLatchie was a stay-at-home father.
