Directors to vote on $9.8M budget

DIXFIELD – Directors at SAD 21’s special meeting at 6 p.m. today are expected to vote on the proposed $9.8 million budget.

They’re also scheduled to vote to accept the district’s Cancardix teachers union’s nearly unanimous decision last week to switch health insurance providers from Aetna Insurance Co. to Anthem Insurance Co.

That 78-2 vote meant a savings of $150,000, Superintendent Tom Ward said Friday, adding that he “is real pleased” with the decision.

So, instead of the last proposed budget of $9,842,750, directors at today’s meeting will see a proposal of $9,805,567.

One thing driving the drop is a $10,000 decrease from the state in funding for SAD 21’s transportation account, Ward said. The other is the impact of insurance coverage changes.

Taxpayers in Canton, Carthage, Dixfield and Peru can expect an overall assessment decrease of .87 percent over last year’s assessment of $3,362,771, Ward added.

Directors are also expected to conduct regular business at the meeting, among which is a second reading of the eligibility policy for both Dirigo Middle School and Dirigo High School.

Monday’s meeting will be held at Dirigo High School.
