Dog hurt; owner wants to know why

DIXFIELD – Police are looking for information leading to the apprehension of whoever unhitched a dog and possibly hurt it before it was returned to its owner.

Police Chief Richard Pickett said the 3-year-old golden retriever named Freedom was apparently unhitched from his leash while he was on the porch of owner Dennis Hanson.

Hanson teaches physical education at Dirigo Middle School.

Hanson said he went out to the porch sometime after 9 p.m. on April 18, discovered his dog was gone, then started calling him.

He could hear young people laughing and talking in nearby McGouldrick Park. He also heard the dog yelping and whining in response to his voice.

When the dog was finally released, around 10:30 p.m., he limped as he returned to Hanson.

Hanson said he isn’t sure how the dog was hurt. The dog’s injuries healed in a few days.

Pickett said officer Jeff Howe is investigating the case. Those with information should phone the police department at 562-4517.

Hanson said he believes the incident could have been a prank. He wants to know who did it.
