PORTLAND – David Pauley pitched seven shutout innings and David Murphy drove in two runs with a double as the Portland Sea Dogs beat the New Britain Rock Cats 3-0 Monday in the Eastern League.
In the first inning, the Sea Dogs (6-5) capitalized on a walk, an error and Jeremy West’s bloop single to score the only run they would need.
The Rock Cats (4-7) threatened in the top of the sixth, advancing runners to second and third with one out. Murphy’s double, a drive off the center-field wall, drove in two Portland runs in the bottom of the sixth. Pauley (1-1) struck out three, walked two and allowed five hits to notch the win. Kevin Frederick and Edgar Martinez combined to complete the shutout.
