Dogs blank New Britain

PORTLAND (AP) – Chris Smith pitched seven shutout innings as the Portland Sea Dogs beat the New Britain Rock Cats 3-0 Tuesday in the Eastern League.

The loss marked New Britain’s second consecutive shutout; the Rock Cats (4-8) have not scored a run in the last 25 innings.

Keoni De Renne’s double was the key hit as the Sea Dogs (7-5) took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning.

After Alberto Concepcion’s RBI single scored one run in the eighth, a costly New Britain error made it 3-0 later in the inning.

Smith (1-1) didn’t allow a hit until Matt Moses led off the seventh with a double. Relievers Barry Hertzler and Edgar Martinez completed Portland’s second consecutive team shutout. New Britain starter Nick Blackburn (0-3) took the loss.
