PORTLAND – Donald E. Mashaw Jr., 65, of Barnard Cove, Greene, died on May 29, at Maine Medical Center with family by his side. He died from complications of emergency surgery.

He was born on Aug. 13, 1940, in Gouverneur, N.Y., the son of Donald Mashaw and Mildred (Morgan). He attended Rome Free Academy and graduated from Gouverneur High School. He began his career in the Bucksport area working for local paper mills. He then traveled throughout the country, continuing his work with the paper mills. He has always worked in the electrical field (Lord Electric) and, most recently, as a project executive in electrical estimating with Fischbach and Moore .working on Boston’s “Big Dig” project. He was a member of FOE Eagle’s Aerie 618 of Sabattus.

He retired in August 2005 to his cottage on Sabattus Lake, where he enjoyed fishing and planning events for family and friends. He would spend hours “reading” his cookbooks and finding new recipes to try out for his next gathering. He hosted an annual golf tournament, the “Bird Open,” which has recently helped raise money to benefit Camp Susan Curtis. He had fun watching others have a good time. He hosted many parties at his cottage including “L, R, C” game nights, family reunions, Bird Open ceremonies, and countless other gatherings. He openly shared what he had with others and looked after many friends and family throughout the years.

Don greatly influenced the lives of many and will be greatly missed. We are who we are by having Don in our lives.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann (Wood) Mashaw; children from his first marriage, Donald III Mashaw and his wife, Gayle, of Daytona, Fla., Lori Gooding and husband, Craig, of Redondo Beach, Calif., Joni Mottola and husband, Bill, of Kent, Ohio and Leah Grant of Belmont, N.H.; stepdaughters, Kelli McDonald and husband, Kevin, of Sabattus, Heidi Brooks M.D. of Lewiston and Katie Brooks of Auburn; eight grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandson; two sisters, Diann Mashaw of Watertown, N.Y., Sandy Mishock and husband, John, of Canandiagua, N.Y., Robert and wife, Katherine and William and wife, Trudy Mashaw, all of Gouverneur, N.Y. and Earl John and his wife, Brenda Mashaw, of Sterling, Ill.; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, Gary.
