LEWISTON — Donald L. Vachon, 56, of Lewiston, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Feb. 23, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, with his family by his side.
He was born in Portland Nov. 1, 1955, the son of the late Roland and Liette Bechard Vachon. He attended local schools, graduating from Lewiston High School in 1974.
On Aug. 27, 1976, he married the love of his life, Susan LaFlamme. Together they worked and raised their young family in the Lewiston-Auburn area.
He was a firefighter for the city of Lewiston, retiring in 2003. He had a passion for his career as a fireman. He could always be heard talking, usually loudly, about his pride in his profession.
He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, Holy Family Church, the Webber Avenue Club, Lewiston Paint Golf League, Tuesday night Fox Ridge Golf League and a past member of the L & A Slow Pitch Softball League. Although he had many interests, his great loves in life were his wife, Susan, his children and, more recently, his beautiful grandchildren. Don truly loved his time spent with his family and friends, especially being on vacation with them.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Susan; two daughters, Becky Evans and her husband, Jack, of Pooler, Ga.; Nicole Tammaro and her husband, Nick, of Cape Elizabeth; three grandchildren, Emily Evans, Avery Evans and Ryan Tammaro; four sisters, Denise Vachon, Constance Sylvester, Sandra Slowik and her husband, Glen, and Celine Dodge and her husband, Tom; his father-in-law, Marcel LaFlamme; his brother-in-law, Danny LaFlamme; his sisters-in-law, Doris Veilleux and her husband, Don, Irene Gagne and her husband, Glenn, and Nancy Bosse and her husband, John; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Theresa LaFlamme.
