LEWISTON — Dorothy Margaret Millett Thomas, 94, formerly of Norway and The Odd Fellows Home of Maine in Auburn, died Saturday, April 17, after a long declining illness.
She was born in Waterford, Sept. 24, 1915, the daughter of Frank Millett and Mary Mills Millett. She attended school in Waterford. She married Frederick Thomas on Sept. 24, 1936, and they made their home in Norway on Lower Main Street.
For many years, she worked as a fancy stitcher at the Auerbach Shoe Co., where now stands the Norway Savings Bank. She also helped run her husband’s business at their residence, The Thomas Electrical Co. Her husband died June 3, 1970, and she remained living at their home until 2001, when she went to live at The Odd Fellows Home in Auburn. In 2007, she went to live at Marshwood in Lewiston, where she lived until she died.
While living alone on Lower Main Street in Norway, she did a great amount of traveling along the eastern United States. It seemed like Aunt Dot was always taking “another trip.” She enjoyed her travels. When she wasn’t traveling, she spent many years as a member of several Senior Citizens groups in Norway/South Paris, Bethel, Oxford and Waterford. And she spent many hours helping other seniors with errands, rides, companionship, and eating out.
She was a very giving woman. One might say she ran “Dorothy’s transportation service” for the elderly. She was a quiet person. Nevertheless, she knew everything that was happening around her. She liked to be the boss, and didn’t miss a trick. She wasn’t afraid to express her views and opinions, she had a fiestyness about her which the people who took care of her at The Odd Fellows Home and Marshwood would attest to. At times her keen sense of humor had everyone in stitches. She had a long, full life and will be missed by all who knew and cared for her, especially her niece, Edna Judkins Jones.
She is survived by her nieces, Edna Judkins Jones of Poland Spring, Shirley Judkins Gray of Wilder, Vt., Rosalie Thomas Wells of Oxford, Roberta Thomas of Hebron, Ruby Thomas of Westbrook and Leatrice Millett Record of South Paris; nephews, Roger Millett of Turner, Raymond Thomas of Auburn and Richard Thomas of Oregon. There are many cousins as well. She was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Ethel Millett Dean, Ruby Millett Judkins, Ruth Millett Thomas and Marion Millett Damon; brothers, Earl Millett, Bertrum Millett, Malcolm Millett and Wilson Millett. She was the last and youngest of her siblings.
A special thank-you to the staff at Marshwood for their care, love and patience and to the staff at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.
