Douglas Alexander Gunn Jr.


Brunswick – Douglas A. Gunn Jr., 60, of Freeport, died April 26, after a brief illness with lung cancer.

Doug was born on April 4, 1946, in Norwich, Conn., the son of the late Douglas A. Gunn Sr. and Annie (Senkewitcz) Gunn. He attended schools in Brooklyn, Conn. and then served in the U.S. Navy, where he served two tours in Vietnam.

He worked at L.L.Bean for more than 20 years, and after retirement he went on to create his own business Gunn’s Lawn Service in 2002. He owned and operated the business till he became sick and then handed the business down to his son.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 66 in Lisbon Falls and a member of the United Maine Craftsman. He found great enjoyment in the outdoors, with a passion for hunting, fishing and camping.

He loved doing work around the house, gardening and birdwatching. He had a great talent when it came to woodworking. His love of carving Santas and angels led to the creation of “PineSanta,” a side business selling the Santas across the country.

He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Hawkins (Higgins) Gunn of Freeport, whom he married on Aug. 10, 1996; his children, a daughter and son, and their respective families, Joyce Jones and husband, Robert, of Norfolk, Va., Ross Gunn and companion, Heather Annas and son, Gabriel Bean, of Yarmouth; his extended children, Paul Steelhammer and wife, Sharon and son, Bud of Clyde, Calif., John Steelhammer and wife, Karen and children Jordan, Andrew, and Scott Babineau, all of Litchfield and Susan Adell and husband, Douglas and children, Corey and Nicole Brule, Sam and Brett Adell, all of Lewiston; a sister, Carole Quish and husband, Thomas, of Manchester, Conn.; and a nephew, Patrick Quish of Manchester, Conn.
