AUBURN — Police said a Poland man was lucky to escape with minor injuries Wednesday after the sport utility vehicle he was driving plowed through a fence, flipped, plunged over a wall and hit a building.

Brendon Joseph Whittaker, 21, told police he was distracted as he was entering a rotary on Turner Street from Mount Auburn Avenue shortly before noon. He tried to retrieve something from the floor of the 2005 Toyota he was driving when it apparently ran up over the rotary’s inner curb then crashed through a metal fence at the corner of the Walmart store entrance.

The vehicle, registered to Jane Whittaker of Poland, was demolished. Damage was estimated at $12,000, according to an accident report.

Damage to the commercial building at 600 Turner St., whose siding was crushed by the collision, was estimated at $7,000, the report said.

Sgt. James Robicheau said it was lucky the gas main service on the exterior of the building had been moved recently due to other vehicles having hit the building in a similar spot.
