DURHAM — A local man was arrested following a head-on collision on Route 136 on Tuesday afternoon.
Paul Bucklin, 25, of Newell Brook Road was charged with operating under the influence and possession of a controlled substance.
Maine State Trooper Tyler Stevenson said that prior to the accident, police had received reports that Bucklin was driving erratically on Interstate 295. He said authorities had been attempting to intercept Bucklin, but it was not a chase.
Bucklin left Interstate 295 at the Freeport exit, Stevenson said, and headed north on Route 136 into Durham. About 1 mile into Durham, Bucklin’s vehicle crossed the center line and slammed into an oncoming car driven by Susan Welch, 53, of Freeport.
Stevenson said neither driver was injured and there were no passengers in either vehicle. Both Bucklin’s 2000 Toyota Echo and Welch’s 2003 Ford Taurus were demolished in the 4:32 p.m. crash.
Bucklin was booked at the Androscoggin County Jail, where he was being held Tuesday night with bail set at $460, according to a spokesman at the jail.
