Durham office to close early Monday for funeral service

DURHAM — Flags will be flown at half staff at all town buildings and property Monday in respect for Board of Selectmen Chairman Wesley Bennett Jr., 73, who died Wednesday at his home after a brief illness.

The town office will close at noon Monday so staff may attend his funeral.

Bennett, who was not seeking re-election, was completing his 20th year as a member of the board, the last 15 as chairman. During his tenure, he usually came into the town office daily and made himself available to townspeople whenever needed.

He will be missed, said fellow town officials and friends. They described him as a dedicated public servant.

Bennett attended his last board meeting three weeks before he died.

Visitation and funeral services will be held at the North Pownal United Methodist Church 1 p.m. Monday, March 15. Afterward, there will be a celebration of his life at the Durham AMVETs Post 13.
