Edwin H. Bates


FALMOUTH, Mass. – Edwin Hill Bates, 92, died at the Royal Nursing Center on July 5.

He was born in Bath, on June 28, 1915, the son of Delmar and Florence (Hill) Bates. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1937, and went to work in South Paris, where he met and married Ada.

He served in the Navy during World War II and then accepted a job in the Cooperative Extension Service at the University of Maine in 1946, and lived in Orono until he retired. He did receive a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1961, then returned to the University of Maine and soon became the director of the Cooperative Extension Service. While living in Orono, he was very active in church and community affairs.

After retiring, he moved to Sarasota, Fla., with his wife and continued to spend summers in West Bath for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Ada (Bonney) Bates, to whom he was married for 68 years; two daughters, Jane B. Churchill, and her husband, Thomas, of Manomet, Mass., and Nancy B. Dimitri, and her husband, Robert, of Sandwich, Mass.; four granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Howard Bates; and a sister, Mary B. Brown.
